Love Your Knees...

That's what they say, and my knees certainly need all the love they can get!

Have been looking at stuff to help the old joints, and the hot stuff seems to be Glucosamine+Chondroitin mixes. However the Glucosamine is in Sulfate form in most tablets I shoped for. - This includes 2 moles of Potassion Chloride for each mole of Glucosamine. Which I am told may add a lot of unwanted salt to your system over a period of time.

So I found this mix which claims not to contains the unwanted Potassium:- [www.sportgoldglucosamine.co.uk]

I managed to score some free samples by filling out the form on that webpage. - Valid till 31st May if anybody wants to try them. There is also a 2-for-1 deal if you like them.

I get pains when I'm pushing stiff gears on the bike, so I'm hoping it will ease things off. - Anybody else tried these, and what results.?

I take Glucosamine Sulphate 500mg and Chondroitin 400mg twice daily and am convinced they help. I'd kind of got out of the habit last year, but when my knees started to grump early on in this ski season, I started them again and touch wood my knees have been much improved since.

Even today having had to walk down from the Goose to the base station in ski boots at Nevis yesterday because the gondola went off due to the wind while I was having fun, they have been fine. Before I took G+C they wouldn't have been.

I wasn't aware of the salt content and get mine from Simply Suppliments ( 240 for £16.95 and £2 off if you go myvouchercodes.co.uk) but I'll visit the web site you mention and try for some freebies. Thanks for the link.

Just tried, but it looks like you need to be in a team with a reference to get the freebie.
I don't eat much salt so I'll stick with Simply Suppliments.

I have been taking Glucosamine and Chondroitin suplements on and off for the past 12 years I swear by them and I honestly reckon it has saved my knees. My specialist predicted knee replacements for me many years ago. Now better than I have been for a long time,

Stop pushing such big gears!!!
That's a bad, Roadie habit. Start thinking like a sports-car driver, revs are your friend. Spin in higher gears instead, much better for the knees and your chain will last longer too!
If you're not actively racing, why continue to think like a racer?
You only get one set of (natural) knees. Be good to them and spin away instead. Start thinking like a mountainbiker...

Oh aye, I'd only worry about the potassium content if you're already suffering from a heart condition or cannot cut out much regular salt from your diet.

now when you say knees, what exactly do you (all) mean here? I've torn ligaments around both knees playing rugby years ago and my right knee in particular still gives me gip on long days (particularly hill-walking, downward only though). I had thought that pretty much all i could do to ease / protect was to strengthen the big muscles in the leg??

Dr. Mike, gis a homer on this! (actually, there's probably a section on his site, away for a skook)

I had a motorbike smash. I made the mistake of standing up afterwards and trying to get onto my bike and ride away. the bones in my leg popped out through my skin. My knees (cartilage) got knackered when I had a pin inserted through the knee all the way down to the ankle to hold me together. Other knee the cartilage wore out as I over compensated on my good leg. A couple of years later I went back to get the pin and screws removed.
I would say at a guess from then on my knees gave me severe gyp. After about maybe 5 years I was quite often struggling to walk up stairs due to the pain and unable to kneel down. After several prescriptions of pain killers and anti inflammatory medication with no improvement I went to see a specialist he said my knee joints were knackered and would only last a few years before I would need to go back for a possible double knee replacement.

This was not something I would of liked to happen so went an seeked out alternative treatments. Acupuncture, physio and high strength glucosamine for about 5 years straight brought my kness back to health. Nowadays I only take the glucosamine if I have banged my knees or done something to hurt them. Or if I know that I will be doing a lot of strenuous knee work I will take the glucosamine every day for a couple of weeks in advance ie before going away on a weeks holiday snowboarding.
In recent years i have taken up snowboarding and got back in the saddle of a mountain bike. Something I would never of dreamed possible a few years previous. I am now many years past the date the specialist quoted for my knee replacement and my knees are almost as good as they were pre bike smash.

Thanks for the various bits of info. I started using my free samples, and I'll give it a month before forming an opinion. - Helen, I just put blanks in the TEAM section of the online form, and still got the free package.

It's all about lubrication of the joints rather than healing ligaments etc. - That's a separate problem.

I appreciate the big-gear point. It's just that my cadence naturally varies according to the situation; hills & headwinds make me push at lower cadence, and easier terrain I spin a bit more. Have done a bit of study on my personal efficiency at different RPM against constant pulse rates.

For me, low cadence is anything below 80rpm, and 90-ish is normal. - May be different for others. When I hit a hill, I generally ride 80-85rpm approx, and let the gear feel a bit stiffer.

Somebody with good strong legs may not realise how hard they are pushing on the articular cartiledge of their knees. Even at good cadence. - I'm going to ride a bit more mileage this month, plus tablets, and see how it goes.

It took 3 months of high strength glucosamine before I noticed an improvement in movement. Ie my joins didnt feel like they were full of sand. the pain reduction was noticed within a month! Some brand names I found worked better than others but the ones with chondroitin as well as glucosamine made the biggest difference irrespective of brand

Like HTH, I entered a few <spaces> into the team and reference textboxes - now waiting for samples.

I think one of the other problems with taking unnecessary Potassium (or "salts") is the increased probability of kidney stones?

My sample pack arrived within a week. Not sure if I like the chewable format as much as just swallowing the other types. - Horses for courses, etc.

Excess Potassium is less harmful than Sodium I believe, since Potassium is the substitute used in Lo-Salt. They claim that Sodium raises Blood Pressure, but that moderate Potassiun can reduce it. - I suppose the key point is how much is "moderate".?

Free stuff is OK, and I'll try to work out whether to stick or switch to another Glucosamine+Chondroitin product in due course.

I got my tablets yesterday so will try them and see how it goes. Knees took a bit of a thumping at work the other day so are giving a bit of trouble just now. They are quite pricey if you were to continue with those once your freebies run out. I think one brand that suited me quite well were from [www.naturesbest.co.uk] here.

Yes I think I'll be trying some others when these are done. not too fond of the residues when chewed. - We'll see how it goes.

Isn't it great how the web-ads on this page have instantly started offering G+C tablets from web traders! - Spooky winking smiley

Helathspan I use i think?..yeah it is [www.healthspan.co.uk]

They`ve just released a new tablet that is specifically designed for poor joints and mixes in some condroitin, glucosamine and other bits and bobs.

Joint synergex---sounds good. THey got brain pill and heart pills but i dont need them quite yet.

"Glucosamine Complex tablets provide an optimal, 1,200mg amount of the very best quality Optiflex Glucosamine, 400mg marine-sourced chondroitin sulphate and a standardised extract of 300mg bromelain.

Optiflex™ Glucosamine promotes formation of new cartilage and may help reduce joint inflammation.

Marine Chondroitin works synergistically with glucosamine to inhibit the breakdown of cartilage. Joint Synergex contains a superior, low molecular weight marine chondroitin that is more easily absorbed into the body and joints. Its greater bioavailability means it can be taken in a lower dose than other forms.

Bromelain is an enzyme extracted from the stem of the pineapple plant. It is a natural alternative to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and may help reduce joint inflammation, stiffness and swelling"

sounds good at least smiling smiley

I was told by my orthopaedic consultant that you can't grow new cartilage.

So claims for this optiflex stuff sounds a bit dubious to me.

Would be nice if I could grow the cartilage I lost in my 'incident' in April last year. Going to see my consultant tomorrow to discuss the results of a recent MRI scan.

No amount of glucosamine is going to put me right again!!

As far as I can glean, it's not making claims for regenerating the Meniscus, which if damaged is lost. But all the products do claim to sustain or regenerate the articular cartilage, which is the sliding interface surface that coats the contact faces of the bones. - I may be wrong. I'm a phycisist, not a medic.

Basically, if you have a complete set of knees, it claims to sustain the smooth movement of the contact surfaces. - The Chondroitin Sulphate claims to sustain the fluid which occupies the joint. I think it also claims some anti-flam properties. Time will tell if knees feel better after long hilly rides.

WD-40 might work better for some! winking smiley

In a discussion with orthopaedic registrar today he confirmed that even articular cartilage cannot regenerate within the body.
There are trials attempting to grow it in the lab but at the moment not very successful sad smiley
The MRI was inconclusive as far as the state of my cartilage is concerned due to interference from all the screws, pins and plate I have agreed to have further surgery to remove the metalwork in my tibia and also to have a camera examine the state of my cartilage and ligaments.
And yes I do use glucosamine anyway to try and reduce any further deterioration!
I have heard of people getting it on prescription maybe I am a suitable candidate for this. I will ask my GP next time I'm in.winking smiley
