What's this?What's this?What's this?
Bike Servicing

How much should I expect to pay for a full service on a Trek Fuel EX-5, full suspension mountain bike [no parts]? Should the servicer supply a work sheet with details of the work done, on completion? Thanks.

Kind regards

Depends very much on who you go to- the bigger the outfit, the more 'evidence' you're going to get and the more they're going to charge you...
Standards are pretty good these days following the introduction of Cytech qualifications, so a bit like taking your car to the garage, get it all explained to you in advance, labour charge rates, likely components required and so on. Set limits too; there are quite a few tasks that can be added on, like replacing pivot bearings/bushings so you might want to know if that extra job is needed.
Again, just like the car, do you want the brakes bled this service? Hydraulic fluid goes off gradually with age as it absorbs water, so a quick bleed often livens up old brakes.
'Full' service of the bike to some folk might include both the fork and the rear shock. Both have partial services that can be done by a competent shop mechanic and also have more comprehensive services that are best done at a specialist, with the component sent away to the likes of TF Tuned or Mojo.

Although I do my own, I have heard that the likes of Bothy in Aviemore provide a high standard of care; in fact, I'd be inclined to go to an independant shop in front of any chain store, the independants always have much more to lose and most to gain from providing excellent customer service.

Hustler; Thanks for responding. The bikes have gone into Bothy Bikes at Dalfaber in Aviemore. I'll post up the 'results' once I get them back.
I recently purchased 2 new Trek Bikes from Alpine Bikes in Tiso at Perth but they will not be getting my business in future as I wasn't impressed with the service there. They even managed to put the front tyre on the wrong way round on a new Trek 3900....and they were also unaware that a Trek Skye 2013 doesn't have mounting points for a pump which meant an additional trip in there to change what they'd sold me.

Kind regards

Having worked in a few bike shops, you'll get better service in an Independant Bike Dealer (bid) than a chain, but a chain retailer offers lower prices.
It will depend on the level of service you need, ask for and pay for.
A full strip down and rebuild will be well over £75 as it will take several hours.

The cost for servicing 2 full suspension bikes was: £108 & £111. This included; 2 Rockshox seal kits @ £18 each, an inner cable @ £4, SP40 ferrules @ £6 [wish I knew what that was!] and a chain powerlink @ £2. Fork servicing was £40 per bike.It sure is an expensive business keeping bikes in decent shape nowadays.
However, the service from Bothy bikes was quick and efficient [they also sorted out the tyre that had been fitted the wrong way round on the Trek 3900 and did not charge for that] They were also happy to make an arrangement with me where anyone using our bikes can take them into Bothy Bikes for repair and they will phone me for payment. I also got Service sheets for both bikes that details what has been done and the associated costs [my proof that the bikes are professionally serviced as we rent them out to guests who are staying at our house....£20 per bike per week, the bargain of the year!]
I have no hesitation in recommending Bothy Bikes.

Kind regards

I just paid £36 at Highland Bikes in Inverness for a minor fork service so your £40 sounds not far off the same price mark, I used bothy bikes for a repair a couple of years ago when staying In Coylumbridge for a few days and found they did an excellent job. The bloke I spoke dealt with was very helpful. All in price sounds not to bad seeing as how you had a seal kit for each bike. I looked into doing the fork service myself but I was looking at spending quite a bit to get all the luricants oils etc and seeing as how I am still under warranty I thought I would get the shop to do it for me.

Hi Olderalan, thank you for your kind comments regarding bike servicing with Bothy Bikes. SP40 ferrules are Shimano's sealed gear outer cable caps! Thanks Hustler for recommending us - I see you've kept your forum name the same, probably for the best considering the frame you replaced your Hustler with!

Bothy Bikes has always provided me with great service on the occasions that I go there, so I happily recommend the place.

Yes, I didn't think that the new frame name would fit me nearly so well as the old one did.
The new build is great, does exactly what I wanted. It's already been to one or two interesting places, including back to Torridon for a boys' weekend away.
Climbs far better than it has any right to as it weighs about the same as a fair sized anchor. Which should be handy for the Alps trip this summer.
