What's this?What's this?What's this?
MTB track Kyleakin
Date Posted: 07.58hrs on Wed 28 Jun 06
Over the winter they have been building new trails behind Kyleakin on Skye. They were using a helicopter for several weeks to transport the materials needed. I think the money came from BP or Shell?
Work stopped in about March so I assumed it was finished and went for a ride - posted a report on the MTB server - went back on Sunday and it’s still only half finished which is a shame as the parts that are finished are great fun the other half is a pain (literally as I keep falling off).
I have tried to post some photos on the MTB server and with help from Alan managed to get one up but can’t post the others.
So I thought I would post them here instead.

I do hope that they finish the project as they must have spent thousands on the track so far and to leave it like it is would be poor. The track consist of 2 loops each of about 3 km – all base work, drainage ditches and bridges are complete and about 2 km is totally finished. The remaining 4 km has large piles of gravel placed every 10 m or so that need raking out on to the base and rolling.
Some quick maths:
400 piles of gravel ½ hour to rake each one out 5 people working 40 hours each i.e. 1 weeks work! There were at least 5 people working on the track for about 4 months over the winter.
Here are the photos anyway.

There is a jump here even if you can't see it.

Looks tooooo hot to rake gravel.? - Nice day.

Are these trails a Govt Secret, or are there any signs about. - (Except the No-Riding sign.)

Mrs HTH has suggested a trip to Skye this summer, but probably not with a rake in her luggage.

Trails are in Cnoc a Mhadaidh-ruaidh woods
No Signs, to get to them ride along the road from Kyleakin to broadford about 400m out of the 40mph zone turn left onto the old road (quite over grown) then left again before you get to the bridge. Through a gate and up onto the trails.
I doubt it's worth the trip though until they are finished. They are just behind my house but i still prefer to ride on the forestry trails.

Certainly looks like a good diversion if the weather is bad over the Cuillen.

Update:
Well I went round the entire trail today (on foot)
Don’t know why they are spending money putting the entrance trail in before finishing the routes. Some repair work is needed as well. 2 trees have fallen and blocked the track totally in 2 places and there are still large piles of gravel on half of the trail.

Got a few questions II - don't know if you have the answers? How long is this circuit, is it waymarked, what grade, who built and paid for it and who manages it i.e is it on Forestry Commission land

Cheers

Length: It's sort of a figure of 8 shape and total length of trail will be about 4 or 5 km
No signs at all
It is on Forestry Commission land and built by them and according to their documentation it is a "blue trail with red and black loops"
Haven't seen a map but it the trail is mentioned in the pdf below
