Forres and around
Date Posted: 20.45hrs on Mon 8 Sep 08
THe family and I are off to a birthday party near Forres this weekend. Promised Land here we come. I've spotted Culbin Forest but wondered if anyone had any mountainbike or backroad cycling recommendation for the neighbourhood. We're staying at Brodie Castle.

Cheers

culbin is pretty flat and dull
depends what you like?

Moray monster trials at ben aigan and fochabers has some interesting man-made biking trails - try google as i forget the website

also, Quarry woods, on the forres side of elgin have some good trails to explore - double and singletrakc, but not waymarked, so its a question of exploring

Thanks for the tips, folks. I will be particularly wary of the country fare! I had a poke around Culbin thanks to the wonders of geograph.org.uk and it is rather dull looking. We might make a dash for the shore, though.

Yup, all the forestry commission stuff in the area is pretty flat (culbin was planted to stabilise the sand dunes)

How about Ben Rinnes near dufftown? Less than an hours drive away. No purpose built tracks but theres a few land rover tracks and a walkers track that we saw evidence of bikes on last month.

Culbin is however an awesome orienteering venue. Given how difficult some of the paths are to run along due to loose sand, I would agree it's not the best biking venue.
Plenty of interesting forest inland though.
