CairnGorm Snow 2012
Date Posted: 15.46hrs on Wed 21 Sep 11
Temps have dropped with a beefy cold front that came through this afternoon and a dusting of snow was visible on the Ptarmigan Restaurant webcam when it switched off for the day at 4pm.

So well into the first month of meteorological autumn and a dusting on the webcam, it seems a good time to start this thread and also remind folk that you only have till 30th September to get CairnGorm season tickets at the early bird price.

Don't miss the deadline! If you already ski 5 or 6 times a season, consider a season ticket, you only need 9 days to break even and almost everyone finds they ski more days just by having a pass.

If you are or turn 17 this winter and aged 17 or under on 1st December and ski at CairnGorm Mountain get a season pass. Junior Season Pass prices are for up to and including 17 years of age on 1st December, but child day tickets are only for 16 and under.

That drift by the fence looks quite promising... Hope the wind dies down a bit tomorrow as forecast, hopefully nothing bad happens overnight!

Crikey those slats are close together on that new snow fence, looks like the gaps are half the size of the slats. Those poles better be sunk well in! Theory would say as fences pass 50% gap ratio towards being solid, the steepness of the drifts should increase, amount caught down-wind decrease while amount trapped upwind increases.

Will be very interesting to see what happens, but I really hope they do not do this lower down the RaceTrack to try and stop snow reaching the passing loop. Though the new fence in Helen's photo is only 1.5x the height of the existing fence, it will be able to catch and store twice as much snow before saturating.

If a fence succeeds in reducing snow reaching the passing loop, then it will also starve the lower White Lady, reversing the trend to a more reliable White Lady since the M1 Race Track fencing was reduced over 2006 and 2007.

Ok, obviously no idea how deep the posts are set, but that to me looks like it would blow over in a decent wind.
I guess we will know by the end of the winter.

They are mighty big posts compared to ones normally used for the traditional style fencing and having seen them piled up at the top of the Traverse, they seem to be pretty well sunk in too from that pic.

Being skiers right side of the M1 RaceTrack means they could probably be buttressed with braces on the poma side to strengthen it against prevailing winds.

Time will tell, if the grounds solid enough and the posts are thick enough it should be fine. But if it comes down in high winds itll get blown into something; such as lifts, piste basher, people, etc. So theyll not take a chance and will make sure its not going to fly.

Alan and I had a wander up today in much better visibility than yesterday. Seeing that the Ptarmigan Bowl had good cover we headed back that way and with route picking managed to get to the top of the Daylodge poma. thumbs up
Some photos here of what I couldn't see yesterday and the M2. [www.winterhighland.info]

Sadly it was raining by the time we left.
