Will the new chairlift offer gravity assisted lift interchange with the existing mid mountain lifts, aka the main basin t-bar and rannoch button?

Are there any plans to upgrade the top cafe? I think it's too small for the amount of people that use it on cold or snowy days. Things like hot chocolate are often on short supply as well. It is not essential but would make it more enjoyable if it wasn't as cramped.

Scotland04,

Completely agree but unfortunately we don't have the cash to do everything at once. Certainly something we plan to do in the future, but think it would involve a bulldozer rather than an extension.

Would the chair to the bottom of the spring run be high enough to get to the main basin t-bar?

@igloo4you Can you answer if the proposal for the new chair from access chair to spring run will be high enough to allow traverse from it to main basin t-bar/Rannoch button? As this seems to be a question on several peoples minds due to the fact it will alleviate stress on both the cliffy chair and wall t-bar in regards to top mountain access and negate the massive queues which occur at weekends.

Cheers

It looks like the proposed new chair goes nowhere near linking with the top lifts. A glide from the wall t-bar or shuffle up from the cliffy has never stopped me going to the coe. Uncertain or limited options for beginners has prevented other people from coming with me repeatedly and the new peasty basher and lifts are huge improvements for them.

The proposed chair does not interchange with the upper mountain lifts. To go that high would significantly increase wind exposure on part of the hill that is a good deal more exposed than Ski Tow Gully. It would also mean a lift over green graded terrain for the most part that could only be used by advanced riders because they would have to come down part of the Spring Run to access the mid and lower mountain.

Perhaps more than that, traversing from that location to the base of Ski Tow Gully goes across the main snowfields, and the intervening rock bands. It's easier to return to the Cliffy / Wall T-bar from the Spring Run than get back to the Main Basin T-bar, with a new beginner tow and big increase in Plateau capacity the pressure should be indirectly reduced on the middle lifts freeing up capacity for those wishing to return to the mid-mountain.

From the Flypaper and East Ridge it's actually easier to ride out to the top of the Access Chair in good snow cover, so having much greater uplift capacity on the Plateau would really help with that as well.

I know much internal discussion went on with regards the pros and cons of different options, but for example a chair linking the Access Chair to the base of the Cliffhanger would give no extra riding capacity and just dump people faster into mid-mountain queues (same reason why a new Carpark Chairlift on CairnGorm is a bad idea unless there is a significant upgrade of mid-mountain capacity first).

The proposed chair will potentially allow new fenced green runs further out on the Plateau, which will further help with reliability of returning from some of the upper mountain runs, as well as providing a much smoother progression curve for novices. It will also make the snowsports area very balanced in terms of range of terrain, and making the upper leg of Mugs Alley Blue might further shift some demand to the Plateau and new Ski Tow freeing up a bit more capacity on the Cliffhanger.

I'd quite like to see a mid-line loading station on the Access Chair either near the old top station or a tower or two below, which would allow a far out fenced run on the Eastern edge of the Plateau to sweep around on a line that would allow people to get quite a bit further down the East Ridge and bowl of the Flypaper and still return to uplift most of the season.

Hi all, I've taken the details from Andy's message and added them to my Google Earth overlay so that you can see more clearly where these new lifts are likely to end up in relation to the the runs. Both lifts have been set to approximately the length and line indicated in the email.

As you'll see from the attached pictures a full 1km for the chair does take it a little way beyond the base of the spring run and onto steeper ground, so I suspect the lift will actually stop short of this point, possibly around the 830m contour line (the corner of the green run).

This looks like a good move to me, if the chair finishes on the 830m contour, then you can ski off and down to the Cliffy/Wall at the start of the day and the ski to the top of the new chair for downloading at the end of the day as well. If the lift goes any higher then you'd have to walk up to download. If Glencoe are able to put in a few pipes for their snow cannons on Old Mugs Alley, then this route could probably be guaranteed for much of the season.

cheers @alan that was well explained and can see the points made, I too would like to see a lower offering of uplift to allow what you mentioned as that is a big snowfield on the plateau which unless the access runs are filled in cant be used without a big walkout.

@tim1wm thanks for taking the time to give us a visual of how it may be.

Great news.

Are there any longer term plans to put uplift into the wee basin SE of the East Ridge? Always looks like the snow lasts quite well down there into the spring. Would open up a whole new aspect of the mountain.

Great news. Like the plans. Well done Andy and the rest of the team. With recent winters and the work you are putting in there things are looking good for Glencoe. I hope it continues.
