Nope from a legal perspective the SCGB can claim to be a national ski club, and it is by far the largest snow sports club in the nation of the United Kingdom. You could similarly claim that the RYA was not the national water sports club because it too is based in England. You would similarly be just as wrong.

The indignation that some people have about it representing their views is just the same for any leading club come lobby group for any sport or recreational activity. In this case it is also fuelled by petty nationalist fever, and misplaced inverted snobbery.

The RYA is the National Governing body of sailing. Snow Sport Scotland is the national governing body of skiing ( or possibly BSS for UK wide) SCGB is not the governing body of skiiing.

Getting off topic, but I can perfectly legally setup a sailing club that has nothing whatsoever to do with the RYA. I can also perfectly legally go out and buy a sailing boat, or power boat or canal boat, motor crusier etc. and operate in onshore and inland waterways in the U.K. without being a member of the RYA. Yet the RYA claims to represent all of those activities at a national level and speak for the users. What gives them that right? The same right that the SCGB has over snow sports by simply being by far the biggest and longest established club.

Anyone has the "right". Whatever that means.

I just think SCGB is a total irrelevance to a skier who is active mainly in Scotland and there are many other things much more important such as this website, the ski centres, activists, the SSC, Dundee Ski club, other ski clubs, Snow Sport Scotland etc. All of these are many times more important and relevant than SCGB.

They might call themselves a representative club and be happy in that illusion. I am perfectly happy with that as clearly it's nonsense.

Snowsport Scotland is the representative body for clubs in Scotland, not SCBG.

The main value of SCGB (wherever you ski IMHO) is to get discounts on
- equipment (10% off at Ellis Brigham)
- Snow Factor (if you use this facility, good for folks in the central belt)
- and holidays if you do a trip abroad.

This can add up, esp if you are buying new kit

Regarding reporting snow depths etc in Scotland, as many have said because of the terrain and local weather its not an exact science. I feel the SCGB do the best they can based on the information they are given, they are obviously reliant on the resorts supplying information, and to be honest I would be very suprised if anyone who ski's in Scotland relies on the SCGB snow report for the Scottish resorts to make up their mind regarding conditions, they will go to the resorts websites direct.

I feel maybe some people have an adgenda against the SCGB and given any chance to knock it they will, as for all the "Southern" and "Londoner" comments, well they are best ignored, it always annoys me when people play this card, of course London is going to have a major representation in all walks of life, its the Capital, eight million people live there and many million more work and live within an hour of there. Population wise well over 50% of the countrys population live within an hour of London, so its going to have over 50% of the concentration of businesses, organisations, money etc etc.

Correct and that (where the membership is) is precisely why it isn't representative of snow sports in Scotland.

To sspeirs - you can get these discounts through other things (not sure about snowfactor) such as SYHA, local club, snow sport Scotland.

yes, dont think that is a problem though, they dont pretend to be, if only 5% to 10% of their membership is Scottish and even less ski in scotland then Scotland shouldnt really be high on their radar / priorities.
Generally I think they are good at what they do and provide useful information in general.

Yes fully agree and the only thing I have an issue with is the notion that SCGB is representative of, or representing, skiing in Scotland or skiers in Scotland.

Once again ... how many winters is it now? ... the SCGB is back to reporting Scottish snow conditions on Friday lunchtime, for the weekend ... with the inevitable results ...

For the record, both Cairngorm and Glencoe are open today.

Yeah, we all know that the SCGB don't report at the weekend. All the snow reports are timestamped with "27 Dec 2013 13:30"... so they're accurate.

Friday's snow overview for Scotland was fairly detailed and pretty accurate too.

There's no point in just posting the same complaint about the SCGB each time you see that, surprise surprise, they haven't updated the report for the weekend. It won't change anything, even if you've made the same point about the timing of updates on 28th December, 9th December, 8th December, 3rd May... etc...

So, the reports were useful for a few people who might have chosen to ski (or not) last Friday afternoon, having made a decision after 13.30.

It's now after 11.00 on Monday, and the SCGB reports still state that Cairngorm and Glencoe are closed (3 days later). For the record, both ski centres (and the other 3 Scottish ski centres) were open all weekend, and all are open this morning. Glencoe has 4 out of 7 lifts open. Cairngorm has 8 out of 11 lifts open.

Out of interest, given that pretty much everyone appears to be unhappy with SCGB reporting, why on earth do you continue to use it. Please don't hit me with "national ski club" - it isn't.
