CairnGorm Snow 2014

Thought I'd kick off this thread as the weather data suggests there's a 90% probability that the blob over CairnGorm on the radar is falling as snow on the top at present! 9pm was the last Summit reading with 0.3°c and it had been dropping. smiling smiley

In anticipation that there might be some snow in the next few day the Ptarmigan webcam is now online:

Good work Alan and top marks to CML for getting the power switched back on a good while before it will be required for its main purpose. Graet co-operation all round.
Might encourage a few 'early bird' season ticket sales if there is visible snow next week?

Kind regards

Optimistically took a trip to Cairngorm today having seen from the summit station and the met office web sites that the summit temperature hovered below freezing and a few showers passed over last night. Fortunately the mist cleared when I arrived and it was obvious there was no point in taking the skis up . This was the largest amount of snow I found !

I thought you'd be up there today Helen and guessed it was going to be too marginal. Very frustrating given the amount of snow which fell at Glencoe on Sunday night and with a mild forecast now through into next month :-(

Can't believe so few showers made it through to CairnGorm given the intensity of some of the showers at Glencoe overnight at the weekend. Even heavy showers over Aviemore last night missed CairnGorm.

Could have got a few turns in high on Happy Valley where it's pretty grassy underneath compared to the scree strewn Main Basin.

It could be on a knife edge at the months end as the ensembles are showing a potential very warm spell rapidly retreating as a high retrogresses allowing a sharp Northerly plunge. A couple of hundred miles could be the difference between snow on the 'Gorms and BBQing in shorts and t-shirt!

For me it will be BBQ in short's. Report in Dublin - temps may reach the high of 22c - I think that is warmer than any summer day last year.

Some nice autumnal shots of high level snow on CairnGorm by Chris Townsend:

This might appeal to quite a few on here:

The Cairngorms in Winter A film by Terry Abraham and Chris Townsend. The DVD has the scenes of the storm ravaged camp (which didn't make the film shown at Eden Court) on the night of the retreat from the Lairig Ghru - it was the days of the big late March storm that needed the snowblower to clear the Ski Road even below the tree line.

Back to the here and now, thought about going for a wonder with my skis yesterday afternoon, but a clearance on the Restaurant webcam didn't look hopeful, plus would have got soaked on the way up the lower slopes!

Alas, looks like it might have been a goer for a few turns somewhere just before dusk after the afternoon showers. Oh well, Helen has a 1 months head start on me regards CairnGorm this time as I missed the early October snow by being in Spain!

snow-forecast seems to suggest a pretty heavy amount tomorrow, though they're incredibly changeable.

Cairngorm now snow-covered above the mid station....Cosmetic only or enough for a skin and slide somewhere?

Wow, that is an amazing and inspiring picture. Roughly how deep does the snow look?
