This morning's snowfall only produced a cosmetic powdering at Clashindarroch, so there is still no real improvement. However the MWIS forecast looks interesting for Wednesday, with snowfall and a slightly lower freezing level than recently. And the good news is that there's at least 700 metres of discontinuous frozen snow on the Haute Route just waiting to act as a sound base for any new snowfall.

Last night's snow spread a smooth duvet of 10cm of fresh along most of the Haute Route, and it's deeper in places where packed in by the wind or sitting on top of the surviving stretches of frozen base. Today it was slow going up there and even required the application of red glide wax to (sacrificial) ski bases to make any progress at all in some places. There was enough depth to get down Leids Leap, although careful step turns and discretionary excursions to the verge were the order of the day. The best bits of the lower trails had up to 8cm but this was getting a wee bit slushy in the afternoon with temperatures above freezing. The Main Drag, between the foot of Short Cut and the foot of Highland Fling, was as usual much thinner but just skiable throughout with occasional prudent use of the verge. On the higher hills above the trails the roaring westerly gale was busy redistributing the snow so we can expect some good wreaths to be building up for touring when the weather eventually settles down. From the forecasts it looks as if the freezing level during Saturday's predicted stormy weather will be crucial in dictating whether Sunday is disappointing or pure magic.

Snow cover at Clashindarroch the same as Thursday, but this morning there was sunshine and no wind! Tramlines were fast enough, with softer snow alongside giving just the right amount of braking effect when required. Main Drag very thin between foot of Short Cut and foot of Highland Fling, but worth putting up with this to enjoy the better cover on the upper trails. With small changes in freezing level so critical, there's little choice but to wait and see what the next 24 hours will bring.

Friday night did bring some snow. Today the trails had 10-20cm depth, slushy lower down by afternoon. the Main Drag remains very thin and one needs to make use of the verge in places. Some of the trails have been groomed (thanks Pete!) which is helping considerably on the higher trails. The Biathlon Range has full cover. For the first time this season, the Timberline snowfield was negotiable, with about 30cm of snow semi-packed by the wind but still rather a plod.

If there is a frost tonight, conditions will be icy in the morning, probably softening up during the day. The car park is currently a mess of rutted slush, which could be interesting on Sunday morning if it does freeze.

Almost a bluebird day today, and with a bit more snow on the trails it would have been. Good to see so many folk out enjoying the conditions. Thanks for the grooming! One could fly along the tramlines and enjoy the pisted centre of the trails for a bit more freedom of expression. The Timberline snowfield was better than on Saturday, with additional windblown powder in places, but the breakable crust still needed a fair bit of effort.

An overnight frost protected yesterday's snow at Clashindarroch, giving almost as good skiing as there was on Sunday, and without the wind. The Main Drag is wearing out between the Short Cut and Highland Fling trail junctions. Today's expected precipitation arrived as drizzle in the afternoon. The forecast does not suggest fresh snow at this altitude in the next few days, so there's likely to be a steady decline in the available skiing -- but at present there's still plenty of snow, especially on the Haute Route, with spring conditions likely to prevail.

Some 100-200m stretches of snow have survived on the Haute Route, the best bit being towards the mobile phone mast from the top of Short Cut, but sadly that seems to be all for now. In an average season (if there is such a thing) there is a good likelihood of snow at Clashindarroch at least through to the end of the first week in March, so maybe the track skis can stay out of the loft for a week or two yet...

The Huntly Nordic Open Championships scheduled for this coming Sun 23rd Feb have been cancelled due to lack of snow.

We will make another attempt to hold our races on Sun 2nd March in the hope we will get some more snow before then.

A brief blip in the general freezing level regime brought fleeting snow to Clashindarroch overnight, but it only amounted to 3-5cm. This gave wet and slow skiing on some of the trails but others were bare or broken. The car park had 3cm general cover at 11.30am but by 2.15pm this had practically all gone. The forecasts hold out little prospect of additional snow there this week.
