The campaign to re-award Alain Baxter's 2002 Olympic bronze medal
Date Posted: 22.48hrs on Tue 11 Feb 14
It's 12 long years since the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics ... and the slalom bronze medal originally awarded to Alain Baxter is still not his. But an iPetition has now been launched to persuade those concerned to restore that medal to him. Please see the link below to access that petition.

Now - three Games later - seems the moment for justice to be done.

Simon Usborne of The Independent has spoken to Alain for this article ...

Alain Baxter: Britain's first medal winner on snow?

The BBC interviewed Alain yesterday, at his specialist ski boot-fitting shop, for 'Reporting Scotland'. The footage starts at 4:03 ...

Most importantly, if you want to support the campaign to have Alain's medal restored to him ... sign this petition ...

ALAIN BAXTER TEAM GB'S FIRST SNOWSPORTS OLYMPIC MEDAL WINNER

And spread the word, via social media!

I don't have any ill feeling towards Alain and I'm aware of the significance of his performance in Salt Lake. I dont think anyone, anywhere would say that his performace on the day didn't deserve to finish third.

I also don't believe for one second he's a drugs cheat, this was an honest mistake around an assumption that an American version of a product would be the same as a UK one and the product never checked for its contents.

None-the-less, it was a mistake that went against the rules, rules that are well known to every athlete. I'm kinda comfortable with where we are tbh. Everyone accepts that Alain came third in that race fair and square (the mistake was not a performance enhancing one after all) but the prize cant be awarded due to an unfortunate mistake that broke the rules [eta - thats not to say the rule isn't rubbish in the way it defines what isn't allowed in a rather blanket fashion, just that it existed and was pretty clear to all].

If nothing else it's a reminder for all athletes that they should be checking everything.

That said, it wont bother me at all if he gets the medal back, so I'll sign the petition, just my thoughts on events.

I've suggested elsewhere that maybe the IOC should mint a second bronze medal, as a unique and historic Olympic gesture, to express and confirm what is obvious - that Alain Baxter wasn't cheating and made the simplest and most inadvertent error possible.

This situation cannot continue to be unresolved in such an unhappy way forever. It must be almost as difficult for Benjamin Raich (the Austrian who inherited Alain's bronze) as it is for Alain himself.

Meanwhile ... for those who missed it ... former Olympian Konrad Bartelski said this - in support of his fellow athlete - on national TV a couple of nights ago, 4 minutes into this broadcast ...

The show's pretty funny, by the way!

Seems like an excellent compromise David. As I said above, dont think anyone could argue that he didn't deserve the position he acheived.

pity the BBC seemed to be so unaware of Alain's medal & the background to it all.

Might be useful to find out what the team doctor was up to when Alain was seeking advice on medication?

4th placed skier said Alain deserved Bronze

Signed. Alain was and always shall be Team GB's first Olympic medal winner on snow as far as I'm concerned. No disrespect to Benjamin Raich or Jenny Jones, it's not their fault.

I like the idea that Alain's or Jenny's are the first medal on snow....neither of them skied or boarded on what anyone here would report on the conditions thread as snow

History books don't record errors made by officials, just the final score or medals table....happens in every sport, it's part of sport and part of human error

The British funding of freestyle due to the English fridges rather than supporting the mountain orientated racers is a modern disgrace that is going unchallenged, Baxters legacy is in taters with this shortfall in funding

All aspects of snow based sports needs supported, xcountry, ski jump, biathlon are all doable in this country

Be Nice to Skiers, they have it hard enough already

Signed the petition just now, as I was thinking about Alain everytime the BBC said JJ's was the first Olympic medal on snow.

Joe public need reminding, and not fed half the story.

Tweeted too this morning.
