Snow patches in England & Wales 2014
Date Posted: 19.55hrs on Mon 10 Mar 14
A bit late starting this year! Apologies. I have been keeping an eye out, needless to say.

Anyway, as it stands at the moment it looks as though Helvellyn is in front for longest-lying snow prospects. This photograph from the 7th March [www.lakedistrictweatherline.co.uk] shows exceptional cover on the hill, and Brown Cove (which is out-of-shot) will be loaded as well. Certainly it bodes well for possible June survival.

The Pennines haven't done anything like as well, with the majority of the snow confined to the Lakes. This photograph from today [twitter.com], by Paul Crabtree, shows some deep wreaths, but pretty thin for early March.

There are some good sized patches on the Snowdonia hills, which should last quite a while yet. I'll post up some of these in due course.

Given their low altitude, and the general mildness of winter, the Peak District has no snow left at all.

Of course, let's not forget that some of the biggest storms of the last few years have come in late March, and much can change!

Please feel free to share on here if you've got any contributions.

Patches visible in the usual locations on Cheviot, noted them whilst driving home from a skiing trip last Tuesday, 4th March.

The F2 Webcam at weardale ski club still showing snow patches. F1 cam field of view has changed so it no long looks onto Chapelfell Top. So it no longer looks at the usual Weardale snow patch.

The new Yadcam views are at a better resolution than the old upper webcam. The view across to Great Dun Fell shows a wreath and some patches.

Skiddaw has a large patch / series of patches at the head of Barkbeth Gill / Gibraltar Crag area.

From the M6 there didn't seem to be any patches visible on the Eden Valley side of Great Dun Fell etc (was past on Monday).

Had a wander up Hopegill Head today, one small patch in the head of Right Hand Gully on Hobcarton Crag.

You're right, it has been a pretty thin year on the Pennines. However, there was a significant snowfall on Great Whernside on a West wind in February which was still there on 1 March (see pictures). There are still drifts on the East side of the hill visible from a distance today in spite of mild weather. I may go up and take a look over the next few days.

Turned out nice at the end of the weekend so I thought I'd have a bit of a wander round the N and NE of Skiddaw. Three main groups of patches - above Barkbethdale on the NW side and round on the E side above the head of Tod Gill and River Caldew. Bit of an outlier on Cockup, probably.

Great photos, OAP! Without any doubt, Helvellyn will be the last hill in England to have snow. This photo from a week ago shows how much was left. Lots! [www.lakedistrictweatherline.co.uk]

Don't think it's going to be a vintage year but I thought I could see the remains of snow on the Weardale ski cam (upper) earlier today. Didn't look long for this world mind.

A good photo of Helvellyn from a couple of days ago, showing substantial deposits still on the east face of the hill. [www.lakedistrictweatherline.co.uk]

A note from Geraint Jones on the Berwyn Mountains of NE Wales. A redoubtable character!

'There was one small snow drift on the eastern slopes of Graig Ferwyn on Friday morning, 4th April.

On Sunday evening April 6th I drove up A5 road to the other side of Corwen to look at the gullies facing North where the snow remained until 7th June last year and no drifts were seen.

Since the 23rd march this year to the 6th April the average max temperature for the village of Llanarmon has been 12.9C with no air frosts recorded for these days.

There has only been 6 days of slight snow cover in the village this winter. Also this winter I have recorded 114 days of snow on the Berwyns - be it cover patches or drifts. This is 77 days less than last Winter (2012/2013).'

Cheviot wander today; 4 patches in the Bellyside Crag area, biggest being 15-20m long by about 4-5 metres at its widest.

Bizzle burn area had two main patches, one of which will split probably tomorrow! One of the gully's that usually holds snow was bare apart from a couple of small patches.

Bizzle Crag had 3 patches, only one is large(ish), the other two fairly small or thin.

Hen hole area; no patches at all - west facing aspect

Cheviot Burn area; no patches at all - west facing aspect

Out of all the patches observed the longest lying will be the Bizzle burn area, hopefully into early May.
Unfortunately I won't be around for much of May to take a look so I'll have to leave it some other local observer.

There is still a lot of snow on the summits of Snowdonia peaks. I was on Angelsey last weekend and looking east, in the direction of Snowdon there was a lot higher up. I couldn't get any pictures because it was too far away, but I imagine some gullies will have a lot of snow left in them.

Great information, jonathan. Good pictures as well. I passed the Cheviot on the SW side last week and saw none, but thought there'd be some on that aspect. Nice to have it confirmed. Still, not likely to last much longer though.

Thanks, rick.
