Cross Fell today no snow left - it lasted beyond 15th June last year. But from Cross Fell patches on Stybarrow Dodd and Helvellyn could still be seen.

Snow lasted in the Pennines into July in 1979.

The thread last year had some pics of great whernside taken in 1979 which lasted until July I think. However when Mickle fell was in Yorkshire, pre 1974, it must have held snow longer than the Dales ?

Snow lasted in the Pennines into July in 1979.

In fact it was August 18th 1979, at Crowdundle Beck near Cross Fell!

Thanks, smick. That ties in with Paul Crabtree's observation, so a probably melt date of 25 May.

A better photograph of Stybarrow Dodd's snow from the 16th May (the day before I was there).

025-Looking back, there is still some snow on Stybarrow Dodd by terrygargrave, on Flickr

I still think this will go before Brown Cove. However, it's visible readily from the A66 so I'd be grateful if someone would keep an eye out!

Firefly, There is a Lake District Ski Club workmeet on Sunday so I should be able to get some photos of the Stybarrow Dodd patches.
I intend to wander Helvellyn and the Dodds on Saturday so will look out any other surviving patches (Browncove, Whiteside, Lurgegill Head ...).
When measuring snow depth (using an avalanche probe), should the probe be vertical or perpendicular to the slope? The former is likely to give a higher reading.

Excellent, Neil.

If I were you I'd concentrate on Stybarrow Dodd and Brown Cove. That said, you might struggle to measure the depth of Brown Cove, given it's steepness. I didn't fancy it when I was there. Had I a rope I'd have given it a whirl! I'm pretty sure the last snow in the Lakes will be one of those.

If Lurgegill Head is still there then it'll be small.

Vertical will give a higher reading, but more reflective of the true depth. If you can, get both!

Out of curiosity, where and when is the meet? I may be tempted...

1st LDSC work party of the summer Sunday 1st June. Meet at Greenside Mine 9.00, carry stuff up the hill to the tow then help with the jobs [www.ldscsnowski.co.uk]

See [www.facebook.com] for latest updates, but the weather forecast is OK for Sunday (deteriorating pm) so it will go ahead.

A cracking day on the hills. Quick summary of snow patches:
- Brown Cove will last for a while yet. Still 2m depth and hard surface
- Small patch above Red Tarn below Helvellyn. Will not last long, undercut with a void under half of it.
- Stybarrow Dodd going rapidly, has split into 2 thin patches and very soft
Didn't find anything else, all other known patches have gone.

I will post details of locations, dimensions and photos on Monday when I am at home.

Helvellyn & the Dodds snow patches 31st May 2014

From south to north, reporting on all patches seen in Firefly's fickr pictures from 16/17 May

1. Red Tarn: NY34241519 c900m One small patch 4m wide x 7m long.Depth 1.1m (0.9m perpendicular to slope).Soft and dissapearing fast, undermined on SW (sunny) side

2.Brown Cove: 14m wide x 18m long. 2m deep at the top. Compare with

3.Browncove Crags: NY85351565 860m. No snow. Yellow grass marks position.

4.Whiteside - upper Brund Gill: NY15601705 780m. No snow. Slight yellowing of grass.

5.Raise - Savage's Gully (by ski club hut): NY34551775 750m. No snow. Yellow grass marks position.

6.Stybarrow Dodd - Deepdale Crags: NY34511895 800m. Large patch below Deepdale Crag split into 2 small thin patches. 12m wide x 8m long, 0.4m deep & 4.5m wide. Max depth 0.5m

7. Stybarrow Dodd - Aira beck: NY34641885 750m. Long patch in gully 3m wide by 23m long. Mostly undercut, 1m to ground but only 0.45m snow depth.

8. Aira beck southern tributary: NYT35031892 750m. Small patch, did not go across to measure it.

9. Great Dodd - Lurgegill Head: NY34472072 730m. No snow. Brown grass so snow not long gone.

10. Great Dodd - Upper Mosedale Beck: NY33802064 750m No snow, no trace (snow reported by oldagepredator on 15th May). There was a small patch here last year on 15 June 2013

General comments:
- 8 figure grid references, heights estimated, dimensions from tape measure, depths by avalanche probe.
- Brown Cove is the only patch likely to survive the week. Others are reducing fast.
- Brown Cove Has thinned dramatically since 2 week ago but this will last a while. Surface is still hard compared to the other patches.
- Only 2 patches visible from Great Dodd: 2. and 8. in the list above. Compare with at least 10 two weeks ago.
- Very busy on Helvellyn and the edges, continuous stream of people. Even the Dodds were busier than usual.
