Helvellyn & the Dodds snow patches 31st May 2014
From south to north, reporting on all patches seen in Firefly's fickr pictures from 16/17 May
1. Red Tarn: NY34241519 c900m One small patch 4m wide x 7m long.Depth 1.1m (0.9m perpendicular to slope).Soft and dissapearing fast, undermined on SW (sunny) side
2.Brown Cove: 14m wide x 18m long. 2m deep at the top. Compare with
3.Browncove Crags: NY85351565 860m. No snow. Yellow grass marks position.
4.Whiteside - upper Brund Gill: NY15601705 780m. No snow. Slight yellowing of grass.
5.Raise - Savage's Gully (by ski club hut): NY34551775 750m. No snow. Yellow grass marks position.
6.Stybarrow Dodd - Deepdale Crags: NY34511895 800m. Large patch below Deepdale Crag split into 2 small thin patches. 12m wide x 8m long, 0.4m deep & 4.5m wide. Max depth 0.5m
7. Stybarrow Dodd - Aira beck: NY34641885 750m. Long patch in gully 3m wide by 23m long. Mostly undercut, 1m to ground but only 0.45m snow depth.
8. Aira beck southern tributary: NYT35031892 750m. Small patch, did not go across to measure it.
9. Great Dodd - Lurgegill Head: NY34472072 730m. No snow. Brown grass so snow not long gone.
10. Great Dodd - Upper Mosedale Beck: NY33802064 750m No snow, no trace (snow reported by oldagepredator on 15th May). There was a small patch here last year on 15 June 2013
General comments:
- 8 figure grid references, heights estimated, dimensions from tape measure, depths by avalanche probe.
- Brown Cove is the only patch likely to survive the week. Others are reducing fast.
- Brown Cove Has thinned dramatically since 2 week ago but this will last a while. Surface is still hard compared to the other patches.
- Only 2 patches visible from Great Dodd: 2. and 8. in the list above. Compare with at least 10 two weeks ago.
- Very busy on Helvellyn and the edges, continuous stream of people. Even the Dodds were busier than usual.
