The 'Eastern Highlands Ski MP' is "definitely on manoeuvres" ...
Date Posted: 06.54hrs on Mon 14 Jul 14
... according to this report today from the FT ...

... which has the hostile headline ...

... and this ...

"Since 2010, public money has been spent on schemes such as a tourist railway in the Cairngorm mountain range near Inverness, ski lifts in the same area and a bailout for the London-Scotland sleeper train."

Is that strictly accurate? The Cairngorm funicular was built ten years before 2010. The only "ski lifts" that spring to mind recently is (sic) an unsubsidised secondhand chairlift installed at Glenshee!

Once we have a little discussion underway on this, I'll refer this thread to the author of the article, Mr Kiran Stacey ...

Meanwhile ... for greater uplift from NE Scotland ...

"The plan is to build a spaceport at a remote site where regular airline traffic is low. The location also has to have a longer-than usual runway or room to build one. This is because after a hypersonic re-entry, spaceplanes will still be travelling at far greater speeds than standard planes and will need more room to land.

Such requirements make either the north or north-east of Scotland a sensible location, away from the busy transatlantic air corridors.

"The UK space industry is one of our great success stories and I am sure there will be a role for Scotland to play in the future," Chief Secretary to the Treasury Danny Alexander said."

/Begin Rant
If ever there was a politician who so fittingly suited the words of Burns it's Danny Alexander.
"bought and sold for English gold, sic a parcel o rogues in a nation"

I'm pretty sure the north east didn't expect to get such a dyed in the wool Tory when they voted for him at the last election!

Seems to be a rehash of this article:

which comes from the mail (yes that well known bastion of quality journalism). You'd think better of the FT than reprinting nonsense a year after the DM without checking any of the 'facts' in the original article but apparently that's what passes for quality journalism.

The public money spent on a tourist railway in the Cairngorm mountain range is detailed in the mail article as a climate change levy exemption. The money spent on ski lifts was the VAT reduction, which was done to bring the UK into line with the rest of the EU. Don't know about the sleeper trains other than what I've read in the 10mins I spent trying to work out WTF this was about. Bollocks!

A bit more digging and it turns out the mail article was a rehash of an FT article by the same Kiran Stacey the day before.

So he's padding out the paper by rewriting a story he thought up last year but still doesn't understand. Not sure that has quality stamped all over it either!

Extend the Kinloss and Lossiemouth runways towards each other. After all they are meant to have the more clear flying days than any other base in the UK - and after Independance they may well become redundant
