CairnGorm Mountain Snow 2015
Date Posted: 09.51hrs on Sat 4 Oct 14
It's starting....

Not the first snow to fall or lie on CairnGorm since the summer solstice, there was a light dusting of fresh snow on the snow field at the Ciste Mhearaidh on one of the days Helen skied there during August - however it's the first good dusting outside the Top Station visible on the webcams of the autumn, so time to start the snow conditions thread for the 2015 season!

Today's sliders:

Today's wee piste, short fresh tracks on a base of last winters snow in the Ciste Mhearaidh a short distance below and SE of the top of the Ptarmigan Tow.

Well done all ! smiling smiley Looks rather nicer with a coating of snow than it did on Thursday and the turns must have been little smoother and quieter winking smiley
No dilemma for me though- mine were definitely turns of the 2013/14 season !

Argh ! Just realise I've put this in the wrong thread then --- sorry !

After 36 hours of torrential rain the sun finally came out this afternoon revealing a dusting of fresh snow on the summits so threw the skis in the car and went for a slide.

The summit was around 2oC but with hardly a breath of wind and strong sunshine I totally misjudged the amount of clothing required, I nearly melted with my pack on my back. Headed over to Ciste Mhearaidh, the patch is small now with the snow bridges becoming eroded but there was about 2-3 cm of fresh snow on top of the old base. This is my first fresh tracks of this new season.

A dusting of snow down to the mid-station this morning on CairnGorm, couple of stormy days coming up with possibly quite heavy snow up top at least - but a bit of doubt about the snow level so keep an eye on the webcams etc. Wind forecast to ease up for the weekend, might we even get a slide up top?

It's been rather a long time since the last post in this thread, but finally as we start meteorological winter we have a covering of snow on the webcams again. Lot more required to get the season underway, but it's colder, it's been quite dry so hopefully the ground will freeze up a bit this week and we'll get the heavier snow showers forecast for the end of the week.

Hummed and hawed but left Inverness the back of midday to investigate. Stunning weather, light fluffy powder, easy skinning to the summit from the zig zags but really too thin to ski without base damage as there weren't many drifts. Managed down very tentatively to the top of the gunbarrel but I wouldn't recommend it. Haven't even looked at my bases yet winking smiley Great to be out though smiling smiley

Really nice to see some white stuff rather than some tired melon stuff smiling smiley and feels like its been a long wait. Weather outlook also now starting to look a bit more promising - any bets on first centre opening date? eye popping smiley

That's great Helen!

Thanks for the report - I was all set to post a query along the lines of "Does anyone know if there's enough snow for a spot of skinning and sliding yet?"

Looking fairly promising for the punt that we took a while ago on booking a £20-odd Perth Travelodge for driving up on Thurs 11th Dec and skiing (anywhere!) on Fri 12th. Fingers crossed!

I like the way it is shaping up.

I predict there will be some Skiing before Xmas before a proper kick off between in the week between Xmas and New year. A long prolonged winter with the east getting the lions share of the snow. I think there will not be as much snow as last year but it will be colder with fewer thaws.

Some really heavy showers have come through Aviemore since mid-night. Looks like theres been around 4 inches on the mountains since the temperature dropped earlier in the evening from radar returns, but with very severe drifting likely.
