Glencoe Snow 2015

Whitest the Summit has been this autumn so far:

The non-icing Summit AWS is iced up, so no windspeed at present! The heating system hasn't been set up because there was an expectation that the existing Summit Hut was going to be taken down as part of the work to install a new generation of RETB signalling on the West Highland Line, but the work program is behind schedule.

We'll get it set up for winter either this week or next.

If you are a regular Glencoe skier from the West Coast, don't forget Warren Miller's No Turning Back at the IMAX at Glasgow Science Centre on Mon 8th Dec: [www.winterhighland.info]

Well it's been a rather quite November for this thread, but the weather's been a bit reminiscent of November 2009, so you never know!

However we might see some white on the webcams tomorrow, radar returns and summit AWS data suggest there has been snow showers on the tops this evening and the snow level might lower a bit tomorrow with a forecast for some heavier snow showers and a Summit temperature of -1°c.

Check: www.winterhighland.info/cams/glencoe .

There was no evidence of winter anywhere at all midweek when me and snowplc were on the Buachaille. The ptarmigan were in their winter colours and very conspicuous ...

The weather model output is suggesting it's reasonably likely that winter will arrive with a vengeance during the first week of December and that it'll be a stormy, blizzardy, batten down the lift huts type of greeting. A little too early for snow ramping maybe but they're the best hints I've seen so far. smiling smiley

A cracking set of pics, nice colour and skeletal mountains all very late autumn. smiling smiley

This area is likely to see a bit more ski traffic come spring thanks to KB's new book. Bring on the snow! thumbs up

Join fellow skiers and boarders at Glencoe on Sat 6th December for the Snowbringer party and launch of Kenny Biggin's second West Coast backcountry guide for the mountains around Glencoe.

Gutted we can't make it as we'll be heading through to Aberdeen on Saturday afternoon to do a screen test for the Warren Miller film at the Belmont Filmhouse at 2pm on Sunday 7th.

Snow on the webcams again, lovely day now - more snow showers forecast for later in the week, but in the meantime no bad thing to get the ground frozen up a bit!

Summit windspeed at Glencoe has not been constant all evening! Icing is causing some strange behaviour on the Summit ultrasonic anemometer.

Just for the record - since the thaw on Sunday didn't help - here is what the snow looked like on opening day Saturday 20th December. Was great to get back on the mountain, even if just for the lower runs.

I'll need to remember to wipe the lens on the headcam when it's damp/snowing in future - but you can see from this there was good snow in all places and despite the thaw from the webcams looks like a good base has remained.

Great day at the Coe today. Spring run and main basin had superb snow with the old icy patch and rock to avoid. Busy but manageable queues.

What a place !
