What's this?What's this?What's this?

A few lucky skiers were pleasantly surprised to find 3-8cm of powdery crisp snow (like the surface of a meringue) at minus 2, under blue skies and very little wind at Clashindarroch this morning. What's more, there is now a frozen base from earlier snow falls. Leids Leap remains almost bare at the bends, and no doubt a few other trails still have thin sections, but the Met Office is sticking with its prediction of snow coming from the north tonight. If it does arrive, roads could be tricky in the morning and a shovel may be handy (if the car park is accessible!).

What you didn't tell everyone Colin, was that the bottom part of Leids Leap was great today. Hedder Wye is worth a ski. If you take care on some of the thinly covered downhills you should have an enjoyable ski tomorrow. Unfortunately there is insufficient snow to groom the trails.

Good news. Peter Thorn reports 5-8cm of fresh snow overnight at Clashindarroch main entrance. A941 from Rhynie had been snowploughed. This morning's forecasts predict some more snow during the day.

Great skiing today. Good skills Colin when you passed us at speed.

Yet again clash surprised me at how much snow it caught last night

Yes Andrew I was a bit worried this morning because it rained quite heavily at my house about 6am, washing away the snow we had. Which is why I popped up first thing this morning to find it had kept snowing in the Clash. Looks like we are getting a top up again now.

Today was the 23rd day of skiing in the Clash this winter. OK only 6 of those could be called good ski days but more importantly this equals last years dismal 23 ski days - the worst on record. And tomorrow we will surpass it.

I had a great run round this evening - set off into a blizzard but it soon calmed down in the trees. Met several of folk out, who all told me they'd heard the Haute route was very thin, but i had a look and it's probably got more snow than anywhere else now.

yes good snow on all the Haute Route. The very top of Leids Leap is thin, but the main downhill of Leids Leap was fine. The one area that was a little thin in places was the main drag of Highland Fling. I was out on my good skis so the snow had to be decent. Caught stones in a couple of places, but all in all pretty good with 5-10cms of snow on a hard base over most of the trails.

I didn't go down Highland Fling but the route further East (Normans way is it?) was OK, apart from one very thin section where the trees overhang the track.

Think I'll go back tonight after work.

I went out for a short ski this evening (Mon 19th Jan). 2-4cm of fresh snow at car park hiding the weekend's traffic. The skiing was great - I headed off onto the lower trails Grotto-Sheepfolds areas as I wanted to check things down there.

With the latest snowfall I suspect the remaining thin areas of snow cover on the main drag have been greatly improved.

Some superb skiing enjoyed by several parties today, with fair weather and generally 10-20cm depth of compacted powder maintained by temperatures just below freezing. Trails are well-tracked by skiers giving smooth and silent progress plus relatively easy uphills as well. Still a brief stony bit on the Main Drag and reportedly also on Norman's Way, these being caused by overhead tree cover keeping the snow off. Leids Leap and Deer Track was a delight. Timberline snowfield has gathered some snow but needs some thaw/freeze to consolidate.

After a cold night (minus 7 at 0900), great skiing conditions again today, with conditions much the same as Tuesday -- the notable change being that, apart from Norman's Way and Herringbone Hill, the main trails have been groomed (Thanks, Peter!).

It was sunny at the Clash today, with spring conditions in effect. Wednesday's grooming has helped the trails considerably -- the legacy being 5-8cm of hard-packed snow. This was surprisingly fast, with a hint of ice, in the shade, but distinctly slow in the sun. Temp. at car park at 1130 was plus 4 and it may have been a degree or two higher on sunny slopes in the afternoon. With no new snow for the past couple of days, the usual places on the Main Drag are wearing thin and stony (before Telemark Twist; top of Telemark Twist; slight descent en route to Highland Fling). Short Cut is wearing out, partly due to tree drips. Timberline snowfield getting better but still not in condition and needs a lot more drifting to cover southwest half properly. Leids Leap and Haute Route still nice. Overall, Saturday should still offer some reasonable skiing, but don't take your best skis! Not definite that Clashindarroch will get any of the snow showers over the next 24 hours, but if it does it'll make all the difference for Saturday. Looks like the snow will turn to mush during Sunday.

Well, the snow showers duly arrived, delivering a centimetre or so to freshen up the hard-packed trails. Not enough to patch the usual thin bits on the Main Drag, but elsewhere on the main trails there was ample cover. It was a busy day today so the trails are now well-polished, with very fast downhills. No doubt Sunday's milder temperatures will soften the snowpack but hopefully it will be compact enough to withstand the thaw.

The snow started fairly crisp this morning, but with the temperature rising to plus 8,it turned sugary during the day. The usual thin sections between Short Cut and Telemark Twist, further along the Main Drag, and at the start of Normans Way, were all melting out by lunchtime. The trails near the Range were still in reasonable shape, and the forecasted return to cooler conditions for Monday should enable long skiable stretches to survive, along with the Range itself which holds the snow well. After today's thaw, any overnight frosts will make conditions icy (as was the car park this morning). Finally, a road closure note which may affect drivers en route to Rhynie and Clashindarroch from the east: according to road signs, the Craighall road (which cuts across from the B9002 at Kennethmont to the A97 north of Rhynie) will be closed for the period Monday 26th to Friday 30th January for roadworks.
