I started out too early this morning then, had traction problems on the hills with my old skis due to icy top layer on the snow.
I hope the bulk of the snow survives in clash, unfortunately the wind has picked up and temperature has just risen to 9degC at old Rayne at 4pm

1-2cm of fresh snow had reached Clashindarroch by mid-afternoon, but the recent thaw (now thankfully past) has left long stony sections on the lower trails especially which will need further snow to make them skiable. There are still long stretches of icy base from last week's snowfalls, much improved by the new dusting. The car park and main trail entrance area have sheet ice under fresh powder. In hopes that we're in for a longer spell of decent conditions, and for those with ambitions towards The Buck, here is this morning's view showing the distribution of the "old" snowfields. Hopefully the gaps are now being filled in...

Conditions at Clashindarroch much the same as on Wednesday, with no new snow and surviving stretches of base hard-frozen. Forecasts all predict snow and strong winds, so we can expect rapidly changing conditions.

As of lunchtime today there had been virtually no new snow since Wednesday, so conditions remained much the same although there has been quite a bit of wind scouring, which has further extended the bare sections. The Haute Route was still good in parts, with 2cm of soft snow on a frozen base. The upper half of Leids Leap was bare, although the lower half (below the steep bends) and Deer Track were still giving a nice descent, as was the northbound descent on the Haute Route from near the mobile phone mast down "La Glace de Clash" towards the top of Short Cut. Reportedly, the other northbound descent on the Haute Route -- towards the top of Highland Fling -- was also still good. A glance along Hedder Wye suggested lots of snow remaining, promising a backwoods atmosphere. The lower trails were not in good shape, with long bare sections. There was still full cover at the Range and on most of its approaches but the Range and the trails were icy, as was the car park. Although The Lair looked tempting, the other less formal lower trails -- Secret Passage, The Grotto, Sheepfolds and Kirkney Cut have all been affected by the overhead tree canopy which has prevented any snow from reaching large parts of them. This afternoon brought snow flurries, together with the hope that a northerly shift in the wind may bring the new snow that's needed. If the forecasts are right, conditions could change rapidly over the next few days.

Alan -- hope it's OK to copy your welcome comment from the Glenmore thread:

"Both Glenmore and perhaps even more so going by the MesoScale models Clashindarroch are going to get a pasteing if the models have this nailed".

It will be great to have some additional snowpack.

By lunchtime today, at least 6cm of fresh snow had reached Clashindarroch, more or less covering the thin or bare patches on the Main Drag, although the odd stone was still encountered. The irksomely stony descent near the start of Norman's Way remained irksome, but hopefully not for much longer. Generally, things are much improved. The Haute Route had 10cm of powder, with a frozen base underlying many sections. Leids Leap was fully skiable once again. And the widespread ice has largely disappeared under the new snow. Further heavy showers were blowing in this afternoon, adding to the cover. Lastly, a photo of a special visitor:

We started out at around 3pm and there was nearly constant snow for a couple hours, so much greater snow depths than you reports timberline

Skiied sheepfolds, herringbone, haute route to leids leap and back down
Reckon 15-20cm on upper trails and 15cm on lower trails

Conditions today sunday 1st Feb. The recent snow has markedly improved the trails with generally at least 10-15cms of fresh snow on a hard base more in places. Still thin in a couple of areas such as the top of Leids leap. The skidoo has been out to pack the main trails, but tracks weren't cut. Skiing was best where the skidoo had packed the trails as it was hard work breaking trail in the soft snow. Road from Rhynie was a little tricky but it has been ploughed. A shovel will be useful for clearing snow in the carpark.

The best day of the season so far, with all main trails complete and around 25cm fresh snow generally, with a mixture of bright intervals and snow showers continuing to build up the snowpack. Temperatures remained at minus 1 for much of the day. Wind-scouring accounts for the very short thin patch at the top of Leids Leap -- the descent itself had good snow depth. Reportedly even Sheepfolds now has full cover, so the wind has done its work blowing the snow in under the trees. The drifting has benefitted the Haute Route and it has brought the Timberline snowfield into full condition, with a 20-metre wide snowpack extending for 900 metres, and up to 2 metres deep at its lower edge.

Full snow cover evident on the A96 Glens of Foudland webcam at present, so there is no doubt that the new snow which reached large parts of Aberdeenshire today will have boosted the snow pack at Clashindarroch (which was already 25cm as of Sunday).

I went up Range Way, Deer Track and Leids Leap and back via Short Cut and Biathlon Way this morning. The snow has consolidated and was squeaky/crumpy. The fresh snow since Sunday has amounted to 7-8cm with most trails having a deep packed base under this. The cumulative snowpack is around 30cm deep off- trail. Temperature was plus 2; trees were dripping; weather bright with cold breeze off cloud hugging tops. Larches full of tiny birds on twitter. A941 from Rhynie was black, with snowbanks at sides. Could be affected by meltwater ice in event of overnight frosts.

FOUND PROPERTY on trails: pair of sunglasses. If yours, please PM me with details.

Conditions today almost identical to Thursday (see above); snow a little crisper due to slightly lower temperature this morning, which made for faster skiing. Warm sun at midday, but little or no loss of snow.

Telemarker, I've not been on the upper forest edge since last Sunday but I'm fairly sure conditions will be just as good as they were then. Here's Sunday's post: "The drifting has benefitted the Haute Route and it has brought the Timberline snowfield into full condition, with a 20-metre wide snowpack extending for 900 metres, and up to 2 metres deep at its lower edge". Out towards the Black Hill there could well be similar stretches close to the trees although not so wide. However, bear in mind that some of the conifer forest has been felled in connection with the windfarm, so the snowfield phenomenon is probably absent on those stretches. I gather, though, that there will be native broadleaf planting which will replace some of the felled areas in due course. Where there is no snowfield, expect wind scouring and sudden occurrences of soft snow with predictable results (in my case at least!). From the Leids Hill area this afternoon, visibility was crystal clear away out to Ben Avon and because of the wind it was not the pure white prospect that you sometimes get (still beautiful though). Yesterday and today you could well have been in cloud up there, despite fine weather lower down. I think this was due to the forecast temperature inversion. Look forward to hearing how you get on.
