When are the Highland's more durable patches (rather than overall snow cover at 900m+) at their deepest/largest/most expansive? It wouldn't surprise me if this year they've been accumulating volume all throughout spring. I'm not sure how this compares to other years though.
It's a question I've been asking myself. My own belief is that the snow on Ben Nevis, particularly in Observatory Gully, is the deepest that it's been all season. When the Observatory was in use many years ago, the deepest snow was sometimes recorded in May. However, from memory I do think it was ever June. Of course, this is just a hunch and has no basis in fact.
It will be very interesting to see the temperature figures for May. There has been very little in the way of any meaningful snow loss, and the recent storms seem to have put down more snow than was lost.
There will be a little bit of heating up this week according to forecast but the medium to long term charts sure that the weather is to remain relatively cool. Not great for the barbecues, but great for the snow!
