There were still patches of snow on the highest hills in the upper reaches of Swaledale today. The largest are on Great Shunner Fell and look as though they might last for some time. I attach a picture taken from near Thwaite. I will try to keep an eye on these over the next couple of weeks.

Message from Geraint Edwards:

'Just a quick message to let you know that the snow dissappeared from the Berwyns on the 8th April, but a slight fresh covering was visible on Saturday morning 11th April.'

I am pleased to report that despite the complete lack of snow visible on Cross Fell from the Eden Valley, there is a healthy range of patches on the northen flank. I walked up this morning (early!) and found a fairly continuous line of patches extending for over a kilometer along the scarp slope above Greg's Hut. The hollow of Cross Fell Well is well filled (approx. 3 - 4m deep) and a number of the other patches are of similar depth. The snow was all well frozen from the overnight frost and should last well as the area gets very little direct sunlight. There are dozens of individual patches ranging in size from tiny to approx. 100m long.

There were also a few sizable patches on the southern and eastern flanks although these were generally fairly shallow.

Helvellyn also looked great in the morning light with the snow showing up really well. The photo is a bit grainy (zoomed in) but shows the view quite well.

I walked to the snowpatches on Cross Fell today, and although I wasn't able to take better photos than Stringy's from Friday, I walked along the northern escarpment of Cross Fell and got a good look at the patches. There are many patches over 10m across, forming an almost continous chain along the whole of the northern lip of the summit plateau for nearly 2km.

Despite the overcast and misty conditions and the cold easterly wind, the air temperature was about 5c, and there was noticeable melting of the snowpatches, so it will be interesting to see how long they survive, they might make it into May. The patches are easily visible from the M74 heading south, around the Gretna Green area.

Here's one photo, not great quality, you might just be able to make out a rucksack at the bottom right for scale comparison.

Brilliant reports, chaps. Well done. Still quite a bit on Cross Fell, and will make May with some ease.

How was the walk, Eddie and Stringy? Straightforward? I'm thinking of going down in a couple of weeks.

It's a really straight forward walk to get to the patches Firefly. If you start from Kirkland, you follow the main track (that goes over the fell to Garrigill) then when you reach the highest point, turn right (South) and you will see the Cross Fell Well patches above you. The rest of the snow lies on a rough line from where the path starts dropping down towards Greg's Hut (marked 'Yad Stone' on map) accross the Northen scarp slope just below the summit plateau. There is also a nice patch to the North of the track in a stream gully at the point where the path starts descending.

Drop me a line when you know when you are coming Iain, I may be able to join you if you would like company. It would be good to carry on to Great Dun Fell, so 2 cars may be of use again.
