John McGowan's pic of Brown Cove, Helvellyn, from Sunday 7th June. I suspect it's going to give 2014 a run for its money. 18th June is the date when it melted last year, so if anyone's around on that date then please be my guest in going to look at it!

It will not have gone unnoticed amongst the more observant 'patchers that there are sheep grazing in close proximity to the snow. We see this time and time again in summer.

Sheep favour grass close (but not too close, as the ground is still frozen and waterlogged) to snow-patches, as it displays a flush of spring growth when it emerges from many months buried. Observers have noted this since the 1600s!

Hello - thought I'd register to post some photos I took whilst walking up Helvellyn on the 11th June. I've always been fascinated by late-lying snow patches and glaciated landforms in general (I also did my dissertation on corrie morphometry quite a few years back!)

I was up there on the 14th May when there was quite a lot of snow patches around still. May take another trip up Helvellyn around Midsummer to see if the Brown Cove patch still remains - which I hope it does to some extent.

Good pictures Emphyrio. It's touch and go whether it'll surpass last year's melt date I think - it looks pretty thin now. I'll be back home soon and look forward to getting up there as soon as I can to check it out. Even after observing this patch for many years I'm amazed how resilient it is and any snow lasting into June in England or Wales is pretty special.

Any updates from anyone on how the snow patch is doing? If its still around by midsummer I may take another trip across - possibly climbing Helvellyn for the midsummer sunrise (the joys of being a postgrad student!) and to check out the ice on the way down.

When I was taking a few shots of the ice patch a lot of other walkers seemed amazed that it was still there. Especially so considering it was over 20C (in the valleys) with most people still in their t-shirts at the top of Helvellyn.

The snow in Brown Cove is stil there just I reckon just under 2m long. It cannot be seen from above and is best seen from the slopes towards the top of Swirral Edge. I have not known it to survive this long and we didnt really have a snowy winter in the Lakes but the cool spring and cold May and cool start to June have helped.

You beat me to it Smick - I was planning on heading up to Brown Cove tomorrow morning. It looks unlikely to last to mid-summer, but it has outlasted last year, just!

Fabulous, smick! Confirmation that Brown Cove has lasted longer than 2014. At 2m long we can be sure it'll be gone tomorrow, which is a day later than 2014! Once again, many thanks.

And that concludes the season for 2015! I will submit the paper to the Royal Meteorological Society, giving credit to those who contributed.

Smick, can you email me your details to iainjamescameron@hotmail.com?

Thanks to everyone for their valuable input, as it really is indispensable.

Iain
