Snow Patches on Mediterranean islands
Date Posted: 21.35hrs on Sun 12 Apr 15
I was quite impressed to see two large patches in the large north-facing gully on Mallorca's highest peak, Puig Major. The peak is 1485m, the patches were at about 1300.

Any other unlikely snow patches spotted around the world this spring?

There are old caves up the 2nd highest summit that were used to store ice.

Vaguely on-topic - while skiing in Italy last week :-)
there was a guy with a ski-etna jacket on. This med. island
seems to have more than a patch available for those that like
to ski volcanoes..

Crete I believe has a ski resort, and this picture from 9th May shows significant snow on Mount Ida.

Plenty of videos on ski touring in Crete on YouTube. Then there is Troodos in Cyprus, still showing plenty of snow on their webcam, though I guess the resort is closed for skiing.

I will be climbing Mount Ida (Psiloritis) on Crete in a few weeks time, I'll be sure to look out for snowpatches.

For anyone interested in ice caves and snowpatches around the world, I wrote a couple of entrries on my blog about this a few years ago:

I didn't know about the ice caves and snowpatches on Mallorca!

As per my last posting I visited Mount Psiloritis on Crete last week. I didn't manage to walk to the summit (2456m), as it turned out to be a more ambitious trip than I expected due to the remaining snow (and also the fairly serious drive to the mountain from the coast). I did walk up to an altitude of about 1500m on its eastern flanks though, to a feature called the Idaean cave.

I found it quite surprising to find so much snow on the mountain in mid-May given its low latitude of 35N (first photograph), and the size of the snowpatch I encountered at the mouth of the cave at the relatively low altitude of 1500m was unexpected (second photograph).

I flew into Instabul's GOckin airport, on the Asian side. The route in goes past the mountain just south of Bursa. Plenty in the top basin. There is a small resort there, weekender type.
I guess it is slightly north of Crete
