CML / Natural Retreats pre-planning drop in sessions Oct 26/27/28
Date Posted: 22.01hrs on Tue 6 Oct 15
CairnGorm Mountain Ltd are hosting a series of pre planning consultation days at the end of October and into November. These relate to the developing proposals for replacement of the Daylodge as part of Natural Retreats development plan.

There is more info on the MCofS website: [www.mcofs.org.uk]

All the proposed developments are contained within Coire Cas and it looks as if Coire na Ciste does not feature in the future plans:

From what can be determined at present, the proposed budget of around 6m will be from public funds either in the form of a loan to NR or build and lease back to the operator.

Yet again millions of pounds of public money is set to be spent on CairnGorm Mountain, skiers and boarders need to make their voices heard, so investment made is the best interests of snowsport provision on the mountain (and thus in supporting a 12 month of the year tourism sector in Strathspey).

This is an opportunity to reverse the mountains decline and rejuvenate snowsports on CairnGorm, business as usual will be continued decline as other areas move forward and CairnGorm Mountain falls further behind. Alone out of Scotland's five commercial areas in lacking operational chairlifts, it can not credibly claim to still be Scotland's premier snowsports area.

Make your voices heard at the following open day.

Cairngorm Hotel, Aviemore:

•Mon 26th Oct 1pm to 9pm
•Tue 27th Oct 11.30am to 7pm

CairnGorm Mountain, Aonach Room (Base Station behind Ranger Base):

•Wed 28th Oct 11.30am to 7pm

Two dates in November were included in the documents send out but were erroneous and have not been confirmed.

Mid week dates do tend to exclude the weekend sector who is the bulk of cairngorm traffic IMHO.
I hope the locals turn out in force to represent those of us who logistical can't attend.

Just remind me, when was the Daylodge Poma installed - ie the last time there was a major infrastructure investment which actually had a substantial benefit to the snowsports operation (I don't count a mid station stopping funicular as a snowsports improvement)?

In 1989 we also had: White Lady T-Bar, Fiacaill T-Bar, Aonach Poma, Ciste Chair and West Wall Chair.
So, only contractions in uplift capacity over the last 25 years.....and nothing new planned.
The drift away will continue [2014 & 2015 being the seasons with the lowest snow-sports market share on Cairn Gorm in the last 12 years]

with new tiger chair at glenshee, if gets good cover...who wont want to give it a go (assuming queues arent mental because its new)

this will mean visitors choosing GS over CGM, new snow blower for road will also make confidence in A93 opening more reliable, again another draw away fro CGM

the "Jewel in the crown" of scottish skiing has lost its shine, and with others no longer standing still, lack of ciste access will slowly kill CGM (and already is)

and that makes me sad

Be Nice to Skiers, they have it hard enough already

If the amount of dummies being spat oot relate tae amount of traffic for other places then the lack of queues could make the mighty cairngorms mair appealing.

I cannae make the meeting, but a wee fold doon table on the train with a V notched out along its length would be handy, maybe also a switch tae shut the driver up...

aye. but to get there, most will have to use the A9. which has its own traffic issues.

Thanks Alan. Being mid-week I doubt I'll be able to travel up from Edinburgh. Given that everything on offer seems to centre around developments based on the Daylodge and its surrounds, do you think that you and your pals will be in a position to question NR on whether they have genuine long-term plans both to maintain and to develop general skiing/snowboarding in the Ciste and also White Lady.?

Here's one of the display boards from today's CML event at the Cairngorm Hotel in Aviemore.

Panel showing 'representative examples' or the architecture styles envisaged with a rendering of the Northern aspect of the proposed new Cas base lodge (top right of image). The building will straddle the top end of both levels of the Cas Carpark - architect estimates reduction of 70-100 parking spaces in Coire Cas. Pre event publicity was for 6m budget, but architect today estimated final costs for the phased base rebuild as towards 15-16m.

Pop along to the Cairngorm Hotel tomorrow (Tue 27th Oct) from 11.30 to 7pm or the Base Station on the mountain on Wed (same times). Also next Wed & Thu also on the mountain.

If you can't make it along there is some information now up on the CML website: [www.cairngormmountain.org]

If you can't make it along to the events you can give feedback by email to planning@naturalretreats.com (subject CairnGorm Mountain) or write to:

If you assume an average of 2.5 people per car, that's 175 to 250 more people who will be using the Ciste shuttle on a busy day. That's at least 4 additional round trips for a typically sized coach. So either you increase the frequency (and cost) of the bus link, or the queue just got longer on busy days (take your pick). Furthermore, they will probably need to increase the number of days on which the bus link operates to account for days when the Cas car park is currently "nearly full".

Either way this adds to the argument in favour of restoring the Ciste chairs, though NR's default position is probably to make people queue for longer. I also suspect that my average "people per car" is on the low side.

There's also going to be a psychological impact on people's decision making process, anybody going to Cairngorm on a busy day knows that there is a risk they will have to use the Ciste car park + bus. The loss of that many spaces in the Cas won't go unnoticed, so the chances that more customers will either choose to go elsewhere, or simply not bother to go out has increased.
