I had a moonlight ski tonight and when I left forest at 9pm 2-3cm snow had fallen on upper trails with a sprinkling at car park level. There is a chance it could get topped up tonight, fingers crossed.

Clash conditions Weds 24th Feb.
There was a few cm of snow overnight. Not as much as I had hoped for but just enough for me to get groomer out. There is still a problem with bare/stoney sections along main drag from top of Telemark Twist to Highland Fling/Normans Way junction. You can carefully work your way past most bad bits but have to take skis off on top part of Telemark Twist. The lower trails in The Grotto / Sheepfolds have thin snow & are not great. The Haute Route is good & there were no problems skiing down Leids Leap.

The forecast is for more snow showers so we are still looking at running the Huntly Open Champs on Sun 28th Feb. We won't make a final decision until Sat. If the races do go ahead we would be looking at 11 to 11:30am start times & race distances of 2.5km, 5km & 10km.

5cm of snow fell overnight at car park level & the trails are in fairly good condition. I even think there may be some skiing on the lower trails (Grotto/Sheepfolds) but I didn't check today. You still need to watch out for rocks between Telemark Twist & the Highland Fling/Norman's Way junction. I groomed the trails today.

The Huntly Nordic Ski Club plan to hold our Open Champs on Sun 28th Feb as long as the snow holds. We will make a final decision Saturday. If the races go ahead there will be distances of1.4km, 2.5km, 5km & 10km.We plan to start the races 1100 to 1130hrs. You welcome to attend.

Bluebird conditions at the Open Championships at Clashindarroch today. 52 skiers enjoyed cloudless skies, warm sun and largely perfect trail conditions for the races. A few bits were on the thin side, but mostly these were on grass so it didn't matter too much. There was reasonable or good cover generally, thanks to Peter's
trail-grooming, but the main drag from Telemark Twist on towards the Highland Fling/Normans Way junction continues to have insufficient snow and couldn't be included in the race courses. The problem there is a combination of stones, tree canopy, and the lack of a good dump of snow throughout the season so far. Today the groomed trails were hard and fast early in the morning, softening as the frost lifted and the sun got to work.

As of Tuesday, the good snow of Sunday's races had thinned and left long bare or scratchy stretches. Some stretches of reasonable snow were still to be found, e.g. on the Haute Route north of the mobile phone mast. Snow was soft and prone to icing if temperatures were to drop.

Went up to clash this afternoon.
1-3" snow on lower trails, sticky in places because ground and snow underneath wasn't frozen. Usual thin area at telemark twist and 200m beyond that. But I was able to keep skis on for whole outing.
Sheepfolds etc not advisable as anywhere under branches would be very thin, I tried going down the grotto but turned back,

Haute route very good, 3-6" snow and much drier and not sticky.

Leads leap fine, didn't hit any stones
Snow started getting sticky again on the deer track
Still snowing at 4pm and 1degC at carpark
More snow and frost forecast overnight

Unsurprisingly the mild temperatures have adversely affected the snow at Clashindarroch, but the ground has not softened yet. After dodging the ice between the main entrance and the Hut, there are still some long skiable stretches. On the lower trails, at least, these are thin with a tendency towards ice or slush depending on the time of day. For example, there is a 200 metre stretch between the Biathlon Range and the Classic Start junction; and from that junction south to the top of Range Way. Range Way itself is more or less green. No reports from the Haute Route, but the above evidence suggests it should have stretches of slightly better snow between bare sections. A few yards off the trails, where patches of undisturbed snow survive, the depth is about 13cm but probably not sufficiently connected to be of anything more than academic interest.

The temperature this afternoon was plus 12, but it was still possible to find skiable snow at Clashindarroch. The best stretch is on the southern part of the Haute Route, which has nearly 400 metres of good skiing on the descent north of the mobile phone mast. Snow depth on the trail there is about 8cm and the tramlines from last week's grooming have survived intact. This section, with its notably colder microclimate, is still in good shape for training and race practice.

The Clash has just had some late season snow. There was skiing from Tues 26-Fri 29th April. The main trail through forest was bare but you were able to ski from the Biathlon Range up the grassy Range Way/DEar Track trails on 6cm of snow up on to the Haute Route where there was 10-15cm of snow to give some pleasant skiing. The attached photos are from Friday & I don't know if the snow has lasted over the weekend.

According to my records for the past 13 years this is the latest skiing in the Clash. The previous latest was 17th April. It would be nice if there was some skiing in May.

Just to prove it was possible to ski in the Clash in May some Huntly skiers managed to find a bit of snow that had survived in a shady trail on Sunday 1st May.
