Aiming to be at Nevis on Saturday smiling smiley

Taking touring kit in the hope that we can use Braveheart to access some unexplored (for us) back country - we have never been out of Coire Dubh.

Can anyone recommend any nice routes? Mellow terrain is fine - we just like being out in the wilds.

Summit gully is one of the best, head right at the top of the summit tow, easy gully will appear on your left in a couple of hundred yds. Go round the gully and head south for the summit cairn , will take about 15 mins from the tow. The cairn is on the top of the west face side of the hill.
Summit gully is then on the other side of the hill on your left as you approach the cairn only about 150 yds or so from the cairn. Hit the cairn and its a left turn . the gully can be identified by a rock outcrop and the entrance is easy from its right hand side with an easy roll in. There is a distinct ridge here and beyond the ridge is Marions you can drop in there and climb out over the ridge if you don't go to low into the bottom end of Summit gully and carry on as below as another option. Marions might be a bit steeper.

Getting to the bottom you can follow a long flat-ish section then a short steep bit and a flat again to the bottom of Braveheart chair up a very short ramp.
A nice diversion is going up the ridge on the far side (skiers right) skins or foot ? and skiing down here to the bottom of Braveheart.

My first day at Nevis today for 4 or 5 years. Great day overall. Goose really good but everything was quite challenging early on. Some new snow on top of a pretty hard and chopped up base and not pisted in many places. Great for me, but not for the wife who packed in early as her pegs gave out.

Sun came out lunchtime for a while and then snow and poor vis intermittently from early afternoon on. Warrens great, but quite tough and lumpy. Really enjoyed it though and had it absolutely to myself both times. Some were taking on the backs and I had a good look over the edge before chickening out !

Links low down are struggling and bare patches all over the place. Still possible to combat ski to bottom though.

I am so pleased Nevis continue to offer such a great experience to their customers, but I worry that there were so few folks out today, with good weather overall during a school holiday period. I wonder how the numbers have been this year? I was quite shocked at how much older all the equipment seemed to look compared to the last time I was there. I fear quite some considerable investment will be needed before much longer. Fingers crossed they will be able to keep it all going.

Anyway, a great day and thanks to all staff. Braveheart running tomorrow I think.

It's Coe for me tomorrow before the 500 mile drive home. Can't wait!

For many schools in Scotland (certainly in the central belt, but may vary), this week is a school week - holidays are next week and the week after

My point was that there seemed to be fewer customers than the conditions justified and it's certainly holiday time in England. I started skiing in Scotland in the early 1980s and lots of people I knew then would travel from all over the UK to get in a couple of days skiing.I noticed a few English accents during my day there on Thursday, but not many. In fact I'd be surprised if there were more than a couple of hundred people on the hill altogether.

I remember first going to Aonach Mor not long after it opened and being wowed by the infrastructure and the way it seemed to deal with what seemed like large numbers of people. Maybe I'm just looking back with rose tinted spectacles, but I fear that people have developed the wrong attitudes about Scottish skiing being in decline and the trouble is that can become a self fulfilling prophecy.

Anyway, I'm shouting loud to all my ski buddies that Scotland still has great skiing. Friday in Glencoe confirmed this and that seemed to be a place where there is a buzzing atmosphere and lots of investment and effort to improve. Very positive!

Excellent ! And I have to say, although it's not working today, your new Loch Morlich one produces really high quality pictures with great colour smiling smiley

We are having a few teething problems with the camera 'disappearing' as far as our server is concerned, at least in part because of the very limited bandwidth available from the Cairngorm exchange. Hope to get it back online in the morning.

What are we all thinking about the chances of Nevis opening this weekend?

Looking to get at least one more day in the backs where i don't need to skin to the top

Nevis is go for the weekend (as long as the forecast doesn't change with regards to wind speeds).Quad Chair, Goose T-bar, Summit and Braveheart is the plan.

Although all lifts except the gondola at Nevis are now closed, there's still sensational snow over the back, and you can start skinning within about 10 minutes' walk from the gondola top station. Plenty of life left in the season yet! [www.winterhighland.info]
