Distant shot of Cheviot taken from near Ford on Friday evening. Most of the smaller patches have gone, just leaving the usual suspects

Helvellyn is actually looking pretty good for the early to mid April and compares very well with this time last year. The snow is currently being helped by cool weather and frequent snow on the fells. This morning it was down to 300m in some areas.
For comparison of last year and this year I have attached 2 photos showing the Red Tarn face. Last year's photo is mine and the photo from yesterday was taken by the Fell Top Assessor.

Yes, think there were one or two climbers a bit surprised by someone taking the quick route down over the weekend.

That's climbers for you. I sort of understand that if you are not a skier and have zero experience of that sort of skiing it might look terrifying, but that is only out of ignorance.

Just had an earful from my mother that this was really dangerous she had seen it on the local news. I have to say I am struggling to see what is dangerous about it, and it looks like at least one other person had dropped in previously, and it's not even a big drop in.

Esk Pike, Great End and a cloud covered glimpse of Sca Fell Pikes all looking good for a while yet. Not enough for skiing though!

Sca Fell Pikes on Saturday, all the snow was very hard. This shows the remaining patches in the area of Dropping Crag North of the top.

I had a drive round in the Dales today and clambered up Great Whernside. Fresh snow over the last couple of days has been melting in the sunshine but still flecks some of the higher hillsides. I identified two remaining patches on Great Whernside which have been there since the beginning of March, which are small and I expect will soon go unless the weather stays cold/more snow falls. I attach pictures of one of the old snow patches, as well as of some new snow on the northern slope (it was beautiful weather). In the far distance Cross Fell, Great Dun Fell and Mickle Fell were visible and had snow on.

John, you don't have a picture which shows the ground to the right of Carnedd Llewelyn do you? The photo you posted is, as you know, the summit of that hill. however, Y Ffoes Ddyfn is slight to the right. I'd like to get a look at it.

Thanks!

(EDIT: on reflection, I'm not sure this is Carnedd Llewelyn's summit cone!)

Firefly the above photo is a long shot from near Tryfan, it is the summit of Llewelyn.
I was on the summit of Llewelyn the week before, I didn't realise this thread would be up yet so no photo but the east face was holding a lot of snow the most in Snowdonia.
As mentioned earlier there is a deep patch on Crib-y-ddysgl the same patch that lasted late last year.

A wander over Cross Fell today, although the snow on Helvellyn and lots of other Lakes Fells was clearly visible from the Eden area. There was a surviving area of old snow at about 780m south of the spot height 786m NE of the top. The wreath on the SE edge of the summit has patches several hundred feet long which are visible from many miles away. The two longest lasting areas Cross Fell Well and its neighbouring scoop probably have the deepest and most likely the ones that will last longest. Some snow was visible on Great and Little Dunn Fells.

I had a good look round the Dales today. I could not see snow in the Dales at any of the usual sites in Swaledale, Wensleydale and Wharfedale or as far as I could tell, as I was at some distance, on the western fells (Ingleborough, Whernside) or the Howgills. I would hypothesize that the small amount of snow I reported above on 17th April would have vanished by say 19 April when the weather warmed up and there is probably now no snow lying anywhere in the Yorkshire Dales.

Further afield I got a good but distant view of the line of drifts on Crossfell referred to by smick above. There was an extensive apron of snow on Helvellyn and (smaller) on Fairfield, with quite a few patches on the hills northward of the Raise, especially Great Dodd Fell. There were a dozen or so patches (smallish) on High Street, and three or four patches on Blencathra. And of course there were many on Bowfell to Scafell (partly obscured).
