I had a good look round the Yorkshire Dales today and found no snow lying anywhere. So I hypothesize that the last snow in the Dales probably went within a couple of days of my last post of 17 April (see above) when the weather warmed up.
Further afield I saw a distant panorama of the Lake District with a good sized apron of snow on Helvellyn and (smaller) on Fairfield, quite a few patches on the hills running north from the Raise, especially Great Dodd Fell, 3 or 4 patches on Blencathra, and about a dozen (mainly small) on High Street. There were plenty of patches on Bowfell to Scafell (although the hills were partly hidden from view), as well as the line of drifts on Crossfell referred to by smick above.

Apologies for submitting two posts that almost repeat the same thing. I thought I had lost one because of computer trouble so did it again, but the original reappeared.

I thought I had signed off for the season last weekend, but some more pictures showing the fabulous views yesterday evening (Great Whernside) after a day's sun on the new snow.

View of the Brown Cove snow patch on Saturday afternoon, from the end of the chimney on the Stang. It looks to be in pretty good condition for the end of April, it may last into June.
New snow from THu/Fri gave a fine day's skiing at LDSC on Raise, but the new snow was going fast. Helvellyn headwall had filled in with blown snow and was skied by some members.

Today was my first trip up Cross Fell this year. The view from home of the western slopes is pretty poor with only a few tiny remnants of snow left so I was not expecting to find very much. Cross Fell however is always full of surprises and I was pleasantly surprised by what I found.
Firstly, I found some remnants of last weeks snow in various shake holes; this area is well known for the shake holes and some of them are very deep and whilst I found 8 or so patches I'm sure that there will be more. The largest I found was about 6m diameter and possibly 1.5m deep.
The patches on the western scarp of the summit will be gone a couple of days I'm sure.
There are a few thin patches on the southern slopes facing Great Dunn Fell (where there are also a couple of smallish patches).
The northern scarp slope (above Greg's Hut) is still holding a lot of snow; there is a line of patches up to 100m or so long and some pretty deep all along this slope. Interestingly the distribution is very different from last year and the hollow that had the longest lasting patch last year has very little. I have looked back at photos from previous years and whilst not on a par with 2010 or 2013, things are looking pretty healthy considering the weird winter. I think some snow may last until June.

The last snow on the south west slope of Cross Fell as seen from the Eden Valley melted today - viewed with binoculars . I thought it would last a little longer but it was very warm and sunny today.

The patches on the north side will last a good while yet.

From a distance I could just make out yesterday two tiny patches on the East side of Great Whernside from the fall at the end of April; these may be gone by today. I suspect that may well be it from the Yorkshire Dales this year.

Great information as usual, Stringy! What size was the biggest patch, in your estimation? I may head down there this weekend for a look.

Hi Ian,
The largest patch in area (the one I call 'Shelf' patch as it lies above a level shelf area with a small pool that had floating ice) was probably over a 150m long x 15m x 1.5m(?). There were several other patches that were in the region of 30m + long and possibly deeper. There were too many patches to do an exhaustive survey of them all. They will all have taken a hit during the last couple of days though with very warm weather with dry easterly winds blowing.

Drop me a line if you do come down this weekend if you'd like some company for Cross Fell.

One other long distance observation from yesterday, shows that there is still a small patch on High Street above Blea Water. My viewpoint and distance were wrong and too great to see if any of the patches that remained on Harter Fell last week were still there.

Geraint Evans went up Carnedd Llewelyn on 8 May and saw Y Ffoes Ddyfn still very large. He estimates up to 4 metres deep, and a candidate for last snow south of the border.

Alas Geraint seems to have trouble mastering the camera feature of his iPad!

Cheviot update from yesterday. Surprised to find 4 patches in the Bellyside area, one of which won't be there by tonight! The largest will probably be gone by next weekend.
Bizzleburn area only had two patches, the largest being the one that melts last in the Cheviots.
Biggest surprise was the large patch in the Bizzle Crag area, a bit larger that Bizzleburn main patch but with not so much depth.
There wasn't too much melting going despite it being a nice sunny day as there was a very cool wind all day.
