The usual longest lasting patch location on Helvellyn between the top of Swirral Edge and Lower Man has nothing. There are several patches still remaining none at the top of the Red Tarn headwall but a couple above water Crag, near the top of Swirral Edge. There are some larger patches low down nearer to Red Tarn and some smaller patches above in Red Tarn Cove. Nothing looks as though it would last the week. There was also one very small patch North of spot height 859m near Brown Cove Crags. These all from Sunday 15th May evening.

I wonder how often Snowdonia or the Cheviots has later survivals than the Lake District.

Couldn't see anything on Cross fell today from the Eden valley.

Fascinating. Brown Cove going quickly, and there's a real chance that Y Ffoes Ddyfn could be the last snow in England and Wales this year for the first time in years. Great information, troops!

Ian,

From reading your Twitter post, you have slightly misunderstood smick's report. The photo that you used on Twitter is to the NW of Lower Man, in the unamed cwm containing Brown Cove Crags. I don't know exactly where smick spotted it but have put an arrow in a likely spot (Brown Cove crags.JPG). Your flag is for the usual snow patch at the top of the gully SE of Lower Man.

The Brown Cove snow patch that is usually the last to go was completely gone on Sunday. <Brown Cove no patch.jpg>

From the fact that the grass around the likely last spot was not too flat and yellow and the mud in the gully was dry, I would estimate 12/13 for the last snow there <Looking down Brown Cove gully.jpg>.

It's really surprising that the Brown Cove patch has gone already and even more surprising that there is some snow left low down on the Red Tarn face. Last weeks very warm weather and strong easterly winds must have done a lot of damage. I don't hold much hope for Cross Fell now, but I'll try and get up there as soon as I can.

I didn't make it up Cross Fell today but did get a good look at the northern slopes (from Hartside) with binoculars. I can confirm that there is one tiny snow patch left on what I call the shelf feature. It's very small and will be gone tomorrow I'm sure. I know the area very well and am confident that will not be any other snow left there. It was too distant to photograph.

It's amazing how fast the snow has melted from my last visit on the 7th.

Yes Neil the tiny patch was near Browncove Crags close to the 859m spot height. The different Brown Cove is the site of the longest survival in the last few years up to 19th June last year!and I saw snow there on 14 June in 2014. Snow lasted longer on Cross Fell in 2013 as it was there on 15 June 2013 whereas the Brown Cove site held no snow on 6th June 2013. Cant get on the hill till Saturday now though!

Thanks, john2.

I scanned the available internet forums last night and saw no evidence of snow on the Lake District hills that I would have thought might be holding it. There's nothing on the Scafells. The Lord's Rake had a bit at the start of the month, but that'll have long gone. St Sunday and Ill Crags don't appear to have any, but that's not 100%. Cust's Gully on Great End might have a wee bit left, but I've yet to see evidence of it. I'll keep looking.

The only question is whether Cross Fell's snow will outlast Helvellyn's. I think it'll be touch-and-go, but favour the former's. Stringy's pics from a couple of weeks ago show a good amount, albeit it'll have melted quite quickly. Whichever one goes first it's highly unlikely anything in England will persist to June. Y Ffoes Ddyfn is looking highly likely to be the last in England and Wales, and may even make it to June.
