New Glencoe Chairlift grinning smiley
Date Posted: 18.35hrs on Tue 2 Aug 16
According to GC PR folk, the new chairlift has been arriving on 8+ lorry's and a long-loader. Anyone want to go on a scouting mission and take some photos?

I for one am very excited.

What's the timescale for installation, Andy? Is it planned to be spinning for the 16/17 or 17/18 season?

I share Cumbrianskihead's excitement, this is going to improve what is already a great resort.

Indeed, I am very excited and while I was going to come up to GC this year to do a week of volentry work (I dont know what they might give me to do, but im very adapt and happy to do re-fencing of hut painting while I see the chairlift being installed, but a 8 hour round trip doesn't quite work for me just to see the delivery of the chair.

For those that don't know I am a super-nerdy Ariel rope way gheek. The more vertical type of train spotter, you might say. A lifetime growing up with more holidays in the alps than Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart has done this too me. Coupled with a love of the local ski hill of Raise in the lake district and the feeling that Scottish skiing is vital for the economy of Aviemore and Fort William alike, theres a wee spirit inside me that can't help but adore Glencoe's management style, not to mention the slightly bashful advanced purchase of the chair.

The first of the 11 truck loads of the new Plateau triple chair. Going to be almost an 18month project, but currently expected to be operational end of 2017 for the 2017/18 season.

With capacity on the plateau quadrupled compared to at present, it's going to be a complete game changer for the mountain's uplift capacity. As it will be longer than the Poma, it will also be easier to access the mid-mountain lifts via Mugs Alley. That along with the greatly increased capacity over the Plateau Poma (which is remaining) is expected to further encourage novices and early intermediates away from the Cliffhanger - freeing up capacity for those returning to the top.

With far less potential for queues than the Poma at present, makes lapping the full on mountain vertical much more attractive so should help spread people around the mountain. With the new fenced green Rankin's Return run much further out East on the Plateau linking up some great but largely unused natural snowfields return from the Flypaper Bowl and East Ridge to the lifts should also be improved.

Here is a piste map for the future. Please note i got it wrong and the new rankin return run will be green, not blue. I think Glencoe has updated it again since then.

A multi storey car park? Nah. Don't think it would ever get planning permision unless it was cladded in wood and stone with native plants adorning it.

I found another intresting chairlift design the other day. Theres only 3 of them in the world and all are used in areas where there are high winds and a need for limited uplift (could be used on demand). Fixed-grip-pulsed chairlift (CLFP-4)
