What's this?What's this?What's this?
Iconic CairnGorm Red Phonebook under threat
Date Posted: 08.51hrs on Thu 6 Oct 16

The iconic red BT phone box on CairnGorm Mountain situated in the mountain garden just above the Base Station of the funicular is amongst over 170 listed for removal by BT in the Highland Council area.

The Highland Council is consulting on BT's plans and where a box is more than 400m away from another one, if people object the council can intervene to stop BT removing the phone and box. The consultation closes on 24th October.

More info: [consult.highland.gov.uk]

As well as being something of an iconic feature, it's also a potential life saver - there may only be a handful of calls made but one could literally be the difference between life and death in an emergency situation, esp as this box is widely indicated on maps.

Press staring to pick up on this, so hopefully more support for these very rural pay phones.

Well, that's the unanimously ugly inbred far right and ignorant support sorted....

I hope they keep it even if they just use it for emergencies. A direct line tae BT's Indian call centre would be ideal to get the situation sorted promptly, specially if it was tae save Scotsman or express readers in rapid time!

Its the phone boxes in towns where there is excellent mobile reception and other homes/buildings where they are no longer needed, but keeping one up there is certainly a must - BT could face bad press if someone in need dies because their mobile had been lost/no signal/dead battery. The mountains of scotland are a rough and servere place for human life, esp in storms.

After formal objections from Community Council and Highland Council, BT have withdrawn the threat of closure / removal of the CairnGorm red phone box.

I'm very glad to see the Cairngorm box has been saved, but there are still other vital boxes under threat: Near Glenmore Lodge, Aonach Mor & Glencoe Ski areas, Glen Brittle Isle of Skye, and many more.

Use [consult.highland.gov.uk] to place your objection. But be quick, think it closes today.
