Clashindarroch Snow Reports 2016/17
Date Posted: 16.33hrs on Wed 9 Nov 16
Weds 9th Nov.

The first skiable snow of the year has arrived at the Clash. At 10am this morning there was 2-3cm on the lower trails rising to +5cm on the higher trails. The temperature then was 0degC with occasional sleety snow showers. Conditions are definitely marginal & you would not want to take your best skis out.

The snow has fallen on a wet base & probably won't last long.

The Forestry Commission have done a lot of work preparing the ski trails for the season. The bad stoney & rutted sections have been repaired, some drainage work done, grass cut & over-hanging branches cut back in many places.

A new trail has been constructed in the Clashindarroch by the Huntly club using sponsorship from Vattenfall & with the support of the Forestry Commission. This trail will hopefully alleviate problems with mobile mast maintenance vehicles on the snowy trails. This route by-passes the problem section. We plan to call it Wildcat. Some photos on our Facebook page.

All we need now is some snow.

Looks like it will enhance the skiing.
The other benefit is it means skiers less likely to scratch skis in thin snow cover, because that section of the trail is pretty stony

11:30am, temp 0degC, occasional light snow flurries.

There is currently 1-2cm of snow on the trails. Not really enough to ski on unless you were very desperate. Forecast is for it to get milder tomorrow but chance of more snow on Boxing Day. Fingers crossed.

Mon 26th Dec

After temperatures of +15degC yesterday normal winter weather has resumed. There is currently plenty of snow for skiing in the Clash. It is a bit wild up there at the moment.

It looks to calm down later, do you think tracks being cut today?

Much of yesterday's snow had disappeared by midday today, due to the ground being unfrozen. There's a couple of hundred metres of trail skiing at La Glace (on the Haute Route between the mobile phone mast and the top of Short Cut) but that's pretty thin and it appears that little else has survived in skiable condition. However, for training or gentle practice the Range and Little Range are still white, with up to 5cm of snow -- this should last into Wednesday at least, as there's a frosty night in store.

Today's showers only produced 2cm wet snow by midday -- whitening most of the trails but insufficient for skiing given the soft ground underlying it. Light snow on and off through the afternoon added a bit but still not really enough. Frost tonight and a top-up tomorrow, as forecast, may help. Road will be icy in the morning due to today's slush and surface water.

By midday today, an extra centimetre or two had topped up yesterday's snow, allowing limited skiing. Lower trails were thin with some bare stretches, but the highest part of the Haute Route had good skiing between Highland Fling and the Viewpoint on up to 6cm of snow. The Range had full cover. Unfortunately the prospects for the next week or so are not encouraging.

Due to the rapid thaw, only a few scraps of snow remain and these are fast melting away.

There is a dusting of snow at Clashindarroch, but not enough to ski on yet.

The snowfall on Wednesday night brought 2-3cm of powder snow to Clashindarroch, but this gave only very limited skiing today with many sections of the main trails unskiable. Temperatures were at or below freezing all day today, and the ground is frozen, so it is hoped that the predicted snowfall for Thursday night will improve the picture.

The snow is here, all the main trails have been groomed -- thanks, Peter! -- and conditions at Clashindarroch are better than they've been for a long, long time. One could even ski from the Hut all the way along the Main Drag to the foot of Highland Fling without being interrupted by stones, although care is still needed at the usual scratchy patches. Thursday evening's snow made all the difference, bringing accumulations of up to 10cm on the lower trails and up to 15cm on the Haute Route. There is very little drifting within the forest, but in places the ditches have filled in just enough to get by the thinnest sections. Things are looking pretty good for the Clash Dash on Sunday, but an occasional top-up of snow over the next 36 hours would be most welcome. An off-trail excursion to the Timberline snowfield today involved a struggle through unconsolidated powdery crust, but the drifts were firming up nicely and may well be in condition by Saturday. With temperatures dropping to minus 2 by nightfall, the roads are icy. The A941 from Rhynie had been affected by overnight drifting but was subsequently ploughed; and the front part of the car park was cleared this morning.

After a bumper day on Saturday, the warm front took over -- and by Sunday morning it was several degrees above freezing with predictable results for the snow. Nonetheless the trails remained skiable long enough for the Clash Dash to go ahead despite the drizzle. By afternoon the cover was disappearing from much of the Haute Route although parts of the trail system kept good cover for longer, and usually it was possible to get by along the verges where the snow had packed in more deeply. As one would expect, the order of the day was wet snow and slush. Good cover survived in the Range area, but unless there's a frost even this won't last, so the hope is for more snow later this month.
