Re: Clashindarroch Snow Sun 29th Jan
Date Posted: 17.23hrs on Sun 29 Jan 17
There is currently 1-2cm on the lowest trails rising to 6cm+ on the Haute Route. The Main Drag was mostly skiable with just a few bare/thin stretches. In places I was able to ski on a film of re-frozen snow. The grassy trails look quite bare but I was able a lot of them. Wildcat was skiable.

Conditions are marginal, not suitable for good skis. There was plenty of reasonable skiing in the sunshine today & I paid a visit to the windfarm trails.

Insufficient snow for grooming.

With today's rain and milder temperatures, most of the snow has gone from Clashindarroch. There are still some 200 metre stretches on the highest part of the Haute Route, but the snow is only 3cm deep and will not last unless the frost returns.

A few forlorn snowflakes on the ground at Clashindarroch today, but nothing to ski on yet. The snow level on The Buck is down to about 1800ft. Hoping for better news soon...

Snowline now slightly lower, with 1 (one) cm. on the Haute Route as of lunchtime today, but nothing lower down. So nothing skiable yet, but with colder temperatures over the next few days the forecast suggests there may be some improvement.

Only a cosmetic improvement to report so far. There is light cover of snow at all levels, amounting to a scant 1cm on parts of the lower trails and around 2cm on parts of the Haute Route. More snow is needed before any skiing is possible, as the present cover where it exists will simply peel away and/or ball up on the skis.

www.xcweather.co.uk has just updated its forecast for the Cabrach, predicting 2-3cm of snow for the early hours of Saturday. It is frequently noted that xc weather back off on their snow forecasts, but if correct this time the extra few cm would make all the difference for Saturday and Sunday's prospects -- subject to not taking out one's best skis. As this is coming on a northerly wind, which greatly favours Clashindarroch, one can perhaps conclude on a less pessimistic note than usual...

It's a bit like watching paint dry -- by lunchtime today a further half centimetre had arrived at Clashindarroch, so the cover is still insufficient. The slightly better news is that the ground is semi-frozen, and the forecast is holding firm to a further few centimetres on Saturday morning, borne on a north wind.

Re: Clashindarroch Snow Report Sat 11th Feb

Clash conditions Sat 11th Feb. There is currently a fairly even 5-10cm on the trails (a bit deeper on Haute Route). The snow was soft & a bit sticky. All trails skiable even on the Grotto/Sheepfold trails where the snow is thinner but skiable on the grassy base. Conditions weren't suitable to groom trails. If we get more snow & it is cold tonight I may try grooming tomorrow. When I left forest at 1pm it was +1degC, overcast with occasional light snow showers.

Saturday's snow had consolidated by today, and with grooming of some of the trails (thanks, Peter!) some reasonable skiing was to be enjoyed on practically all routes. However, the snow depth remains relatively thin and the groomed surfaces have become polished by skiers, with a fair amount of grit showing through in places. So there is skiing, but with some challenges to contend with.

A walk up Highland Fling, along the Haute Route, and back down Short Cut revealed just ragged ribbons of melting snow, too thin to ski on, except for one 150m stretch on the Haute Route. The trails have long completely bare sections. There is a patch at the Range, just big enough for a "standing class" but with insufficient snow round about to do striding practice or mini-tours. I would not expect that to last beyond Thursday. Where there is any snow on the ground, conditions will be icy after any overnight frosts.

Alan's post on the Forum today more or less sums it up. There were some very light snow flurries at Clashindarroch today but no more than a few flakes on the ground. The area is just outside the Met Office's snow warning area, but XC Weather is forecasting up to 9cm on Thursday and another 4cm on Friday evening. Saturday looks wet, windy and mild. If the snow survives there might just be enough for skiing on Sunday, which might enable the HNSC Open Championships to go ahead -- it will be a last-minute decision whether to hold the event or postpone.

Storm Doris brought about 6cm of snow to Clashindarroch. It's fairly evenly distributed but thinner in the usual places. Skiing conditions today ranged from good to sticky. Friday should be better due to colder temperatures overnight.

Conditions were near perfect this morning, with temp minus 3, sunshine and no wind. It warmed up a bit in the afternoon, with the snow becoming slower on the lower trails although remaining good higher up. There has been no fresh snow, so the depth continues to be about 6cm, thinner in places (which makes descending Leids Leap a bit tricky, although it's fine going up it). It has not been possible to groom the trails, but they are well tracked by skiers. Hopefully this will allow skiing to continue throughout the weekend at least.

Because of the limited snow depth and uncertain weather prospects, there has been no decision yet regarding Sunday's HNSC Open Championships. We may have to see how well the snow survives Saturday's temporary thaw.
