Not usually a betting man, but I'd wager that a snow-free highlands will very soon be the norm rather than the exception.


There is nothing in climate modelling that shows snow is going to disappear from the Scottish Highlands in the life time of anyone capable of reading this forum. If it did, then snow on Scottish Mountains would be pretty damn low down people's list of concerns!

There's quite a difference between "disappear" and become rare! Snow hasn't disappeared from London, but it occurs for a few hours a year now!


It's taken 20 years for something to happen that previously took 300 years.


It's obvious that snow in the highlands is low on people's concerns. But it's the canary in the coal mine. Marginal climates like those of the Cairngorms will be the first to change (it most likely already has changed); other such marginal climates, be it the semi-arid wheat belts, or glaciers in Asia feed and water billions of people!
