Summer 2017 Improvements
Date Posted: 09.10hrs on Sun 25 Jun 17
Any news on work on Glencoe's new chair? If it's to be in place for next season then work must be starting fairly soon, if not started already.

Anyone know of any other work planned over this summer for what will hopefully be a better and more profitable season next winter?

Both Glencoe and Glenshee's new chairlifts remain stuck in different stages of planning limbo. It's in stark contrast to the Coire Pollach Tow at Glencoe and the Cairnwell Triple Chair at Glenshee previously.

At Glencoe there's been a fair bit of fencing work done already, including double fencing the Coire Pollach Tow uptrack. Significant amount of fencing work scheduled for the summer at Nevis Range.

I thought planning permission for the Gencoe Chair was granted on the 18th of March last year.

Muzza, We have permission to build the chair but not for the access road needed to build it. Hopefully we will get the permission we need some time soon as application has taken 18months so far.

Thanks for the updates Alan and Andy.

It seems such a shame that Estates seem to be able to bulldoze miles of track on the hills willy nilly yet a small extension to an existing track to facilitate local economic development faces such a struggle.

I asked Glenshee about the situation, the quad isn't comming this year. As reason they stated the terrible season last year.

Why is there a problem with the road instead of the chair

Planning permission for the new access road will take into account many aspects; visual impact, environmental impact etc.
On top of that consulting with single issue groups such a save the great crested newt, bats etc. - they will tell you when you get it wrong - but in my experience are never forthcoming with how to get it right. This in my experience is driven by their antipathy towards any new development in favour of their own cherished cause.
Just saying like ...

I guess the roads needed for the big cranes to lift the pylons up?

Anybody fancy chipping in for a Chinook?

skicadets,

You would need to ask SNH that question. Everyone else has been happy with our proposal for over a year now. We already have a well established network of tracks on the plateau and some rough tracks/paths up to the plateau. All we want to do is link these rough tracks, weasel track, paths etc together to create a well managed forestry track up the mountain. Unfortunately these continuing delays by SNH mean the chairlift won't be completed for next winter, we still however hope to make a start if we ever get a decision.

There are significant fencing improvements underway at Nevis Range. It's out with the old style chesnut style fencing and in with the new and higher rail style. There will be significant snow holding benefits which should lead to additional periods of time when they are able to open.
Some fencing is already installed and there is a lot of wood distributed around the lower Pistes ready to be put up [couldn't see higher up due to clagg] In addition, they still have quite a lot of wood outside the Snowgoose.....I hope they have the time to get it all put up before the snow arrives
I hope that they get the additional business that their efforts deserve. I'll be making the effort to get there myself this coming season [haven't been since 2016]
Full marks for taking things forward positively.

Kind regards

Olderalan

Anything to be expected on the snowmaking front for the '17-'18 season? The fences in combination with snowmaking could be gold!
