Disappointing re the Glencoe chair delay...Had assumed it would be in for this winter as it seems an eternity since it all arrived on site.

Two questions:

1. Pardon my ignorance but who or what are SNH?
2. Whatever happened to the Glencoe zip wire project? Just been on the one at The Eden Project in Cornwall, which was excellent. A Glencoe one would be steeper and faster - so even better.Definite money spinner I reckon.

Mountainaddict,

SNH are Scottish Natural Heritage a Government funded body that looks after all of Scotland's nature and landscapes. Unfortunately like many of these bodies they work to there own timescales and what could be done in weeks often takes years.

Zip wire project is still alive and well but was put on hold while we upgraded the Access Chair and built the Coire Pollach button tow. Unfortunately the very poor winter last year means that we didn't have the funds to build it this year. We are going to need a couple of pretty good winters to secure the £950,000 build costs for the project. If planning is granted for the 3 man chairlift some time soon then we expect this to be completed during 2018 and with a couple of good ski seasons work could begin on the Zipline during summer of 2019.

This is not a serious reply to igloo4you, but couldn't the plateau poma be used as a zipline lol!!!

£950,000 is a lot for a zipline. You could buy several snow cannons and a decent pumping station for that.

What can we do to cause these guys pain, Igloo?

They should feel or wrath for what they have done to you and your team. Can we submit lots of Freedom of Information requests, bombard them with white mail letters, ring them incessantly?

It's not on that your business and our sport are jeopardised by these sorts.

Can we point to other similar examples, perhaps get an MSP/MP to champion your cause.

You deserve the support of all skiers in Scotland and us exiles in Engurland!

Re : SNH.
Prior to 2014 no legislation was required to build hill tracks in Scotland.
As result several highland glens were being scarred by inappropriate tracks for hydro schemes, wind farms, forestry etc.

Personally I think it is appropriate that all hill roads and estate tracks now require planning permission... Obviously frustrating for Glencoe - however the new rules are there for good reason.

Incidentally - the new Coire Pollach poma tow is superb for teaching small children. Holds the snow well and a better gradient that the plateau. Not the most exciting ski tow in the world - but a great investment in future generations thumbs up.

oversteer, Thanks for the offer of help but we seem to be moving in the right direction now. Any action likely to be counter productive.

Doug-Bryce, Completely agree that planning should be necessary but process for planning should not take 18months.

Does anyone (Andy?) know where the new glencoe triple came from? It is secondhand right, so maybe someone knows a previous name?

Hum, if it has taken SNH 18 months to process the planning then you should be able to take them to court over that. There are rules about this sort of shenanigans and SNH are firmly the wrong side of them if it has taken anything like 18 months.

All planning applications and supporting documents can be found online.
Enter the postcode (ph49 4hz).

Applications for new ski tows (x2), garage, bike tracks and a zip wire all accepted. It is frustrating that the new access track is taking time - however it shouldn't take much imagination to consider why there might be concerns.

Government guidelines for development of Scottish ski areas below.
Interesting read and generally pro-development within the existing 5 ski area boundaries.

Doug-bryce, We're still waiting for an answer on our new garage as well. That's also been in process for last 18months. While we appreciate that proper scrutiny of any application has to be carried out the actual process in this case has been a real challenge.

Great stuff Andy, I have just been to Glencoe a few days ago, took my family on a chairlift ride, I have met a number of tourists from different parts of Europe, The zip wire project will do wonders for this place as it will boost much needed income.

Did anyone else notice that a new garage/workshop to hold Max 4 PistenBully's has been planned?

I like the idea that Glencoe wish to take care of their investments.
