Nevis Range 2018
Date Posted: 09.30hrs on Wed 29 Nov 17
snow looking like its building on Aonach Mor with reports of people skiing down to tower 4 of the goose. My question, why does Nevis Range conduct their Gondola maintenance every year so close to winter. why not do it during the autumn so they can capitalise on potential early snowfalls.

i'll be gutted if the mountain is loaded but they cant open for another 3 weeks.

Visitor numbers and money. They get plenty of gondola visitors during October with the school holidays and then into the start November, so they're still in summer mode at that point.

The annual gondola maintenance has to happen at some point and the end of Nov/start of Dec is the quietest time to do it.

Speaking to lift staff at the pre-season gathering earlier this month, they were undertaking some major work on the Gondola bull wheels this year, which was on top of the usual maintenance.

Nevis Range opening tomorrow - [www.nevisrange.co.uk]

Lower mountain only at this stage but with more snow showers coming through maybe more can be opened up for the weekend.

and with the 50+ cm of snow forecast there should be enough to open. Powder turns incoming.

Nevis Range now up and running with lift served snowsports on the lower mountain with the Linnhe and Alpha Tows running. Machine made snow base on the Linnhe so good novice areas, Alpha fresh driftings now, thin in bits but improving in steady snowfall this morning. 5-6" since last night according to the radar and more to come.

The latest 48 hour ultra high resolution NMM model run has light cyclonically variable winds for both Nevis and Glencoe on New Years morning, clusters of snow showers will be slow moving within the centre of a low pressure system. Wind likely to freshen at some point during the afternoon, timing various depending what model you look at, but direction will be North West when once the speed starts to increase and Nevis is particularly sheltered from NW winds away from the Summit (which isn't scheduled to open anyway).

Are there any good ski hire places in Fort William other than hiring at Nevis range?

Unless it has changed again recently there is no ski / snowboard hire in town, but both Nevis and Glencoe have expanded their hire stock quite considerably in the last couple of years.

The last couple of seasons I haven't had a single problem with the rental kit at Nevis, the kit is actually very good as far rental kit goes. Prebook online and get to the hill early and you'll be sorted!
