Wales' last snow melted on 17 or 18 May, at Y Ffoes Ddyfn on Carnedd Llewelyn.

We'll, the month of May has just over 3 hours remaining. Meteorological Summer is about to arrive. How many English snow patches will remain and in which locations?

Just an update, given we're now into June...

Firstly, the information I gave regarding Y Ffoes Ddyfn was incorrect. Geraint Evans got in touch to say that he saw that location in good light, through binoculars, on 20 May and it was still there. He estimates 23rd May as final melt date.

Brown Cove on Helvellyn wasn't present when Terry Abraham flew over it on the evening of 28 May. It was last seen 23 May, but wasn't terribly big. Estimating 27 or 28 May final melting. I've had no reports of anything else on the Lakes' hills, so Brown Cove is likely to be the last.

Terry Abraham said that on his flight of 28 May he saw patches in the 'gullies' of Great Dun Fell and Cross Fell. The gullies referred to are without doubt Middle Tongue Beck on the former, and Kirkdale on the latter. The satellite image of 23 May shows the snow at Middle Tongue Beck quite clearly, here. Alas cloud obscures Cross Fell's west side in the same picture.

My own view, based upon the temperatures and size of patches, is that it's likely that a remnant of one of these Pennines' patches lasted until today.

What we can say for sure, though, is that The Cheviot definitely has snow. There are three (English) patches extant, and one Scottish. There is a guy going up today to check on these, so I'll hopefully get a fix on them later.

I was going to nip up to Brown Cove today after work, but the thunderstorms put pay to that idea - sounds like I wouldn't have found anything anyway.

The cloudier weather has also reduced visibility so I have not been able to see the Pennines clearly for the last few days, but I last saw the patch near Silver Band mine (this is in a gully that feeds Middle Tongue Beck) when I went up Cross Fell a week ago. It is the patch shown on the satellite image. Judging by it's size last Friday and the very warm weather, I doubt it made it until today - May the 29th or 30th would seem more likely as a final melt date.

This just leaves the Cheviots.

Cheviots 2nd June; confirmation that Bellyside east area has no patches left, upper Bizzle Burn has 3 small patches and Bizzle Crag has one patch, these I guess will be gone in the next few days.
The impressive Hen Hole wreath has gone, just leaving the 3 patches in the upper College Burn, these hopefully will survive til next weekend.

There are also 3 patches, one quite a size, the other two very small, just over the border in the Cheviot Burn area so these are Scottish snow patches!

**The date of the visit was 2nd June**

Steven Dick visited the upper Bizzle Burn area on Saturday and found a very shallow patch, no more than 1.5 metres across. This would have melted yesterday, and was the last patch in England and Wales.

Therefore, this thread can go into hibernation for another year! Thanks to all who contributed. I'm going to write up a paper and submit it to the Royal Met Society as usual. Hopefully it'll be paper number 9 for England and Wales!
