Snow patches in Scotland 2018
Date Posted: 07.29hrs on Tue 8 May 18
Despite all the media frenzy during winter about the 'Beast from the East', the general state of the 'usual' Scottish locations is not vintage. Without doubt some areas have fared better than others, but N, NE, E and SE-facing aspects are pretty much where you'd expect them to be. That said, there are some very unusual patches still lurking in out-of-the-way places that normally have long gone by now.

As of yesterday, there were still sizable wreaths in Glentress forest, near Peebles (see here: [twitter.com]), and the Campsies near Glasgow still had snow as of yesterday: [www.flickr.com]

I was up on The Cheviot on Sunday and I saw from afar some large wreaths on the usual Borders' hills. A few examples can be found in this album: [www.flickr.com]

Here's to a good long season!

With the English season drawing to a close, where are the best contenders for full year survivals in Scotland now? Are Anoach Mor/Beag and Ben Nevis a better bet than the usual sites in the Cairngorms?

Given the May temperature anomaly in the Cairncorms was greater than +3 Celsius over the average, my guess is that the chances of an full year survivals are slim to none existent this year.

A photo from Ben Nevis yesterday showing people trying to negotiate a snowpatch they didn't expect.

After a winter which made headlines but delivered surprisingly little, and a prolonged heatwave, we now have a situation where there is not a huge amount left and it'll take a slice of good fortune in early autumn to save the last patches. The question is, will GCM be outlasted by a patch elsewhere? This has never been recorded before, but could it happen this time?
