CairnGorm Webcams and showing Strathspey is open for business!
Date Posted: 15.10hrs on Mon 22 Oct 18
Moody autumn skies above CairnGorm from a sunlit Loch Morlich beach this afternoon and forecasts indicate the mountain will have a winter coat to coincide with the clocks going back.

Just under 11 months ago Natural Retreats / CairnGorm Mountain Ltd took it upon themselves to remove 3 of our webcams and weather station from the SSC Hut. This was to the detriment of all mountain users, not just paying customers of CML, and reduction in coverage contributed to CairnGorm recording it's lowest ever share of the Scottish Snowsports Market in 2017/18.

Last week Bill Lobban, Convenor of the The Highland Council issued a rallying cry for people to work together to spread the word that Strathspey was open for business in the midst of the widespread news cover over the Funicular.

It is over a month since CMLs mid-mountain webcams have worked and hardly any have worked for any length of time in the past 2-3months. This does not help give the impression that CairnGorm and Aviemore are open for business.

We stand ready to help with the message that the Strath is open for business and to encourage folk to visit for all mountain activities. We are willing and able to put into service an enhanced webcam offering at the SSC Hut on CairnGorm at our expense. If a suitable location can be identified at Glenmore then in addition to also install a webcam looking into Coire na Ciste. (No existing buildings on the mountain provide a suitable view).

We specifically ask Bill Lobban as chair of the response group set up in light of the Funicular closure to support us in this endeavour for the benefit of the wider Strathspey and mountain sports communities.

IF we could see up to date cover on the mountain - ie info we could rely on - Mrs MA and I are prepared to do a 600 mile round trip to ski tour on Cairngorm & spend a few quid locally on digs, food etc.

However, we'll not take a chance on it without reliable webcam info...
