After walking in as far as the Hut, it is still possible to ski a length of 400 metres or so -- linking the Range, the Little Range, Biathlon Way, then left on Classic Start as far as the junction with Rollercoaster -- where the snow runs out. The snow this morning was firm, despite temperatures of plus 9 and springlike weather. There is 25% cover on the Range (about 10cm deep), 100% on the Little Range (about 15cm deep), while on the rest of the route the trail is generally wide but narrows to about 150mm in places. The big ramp from the Little Range down to the Range is skiable, but look out for the hard bump at the bottom! So it looks like there should still be sufficient snow, in reasonable condition, for serious practice, or just good fun, through Sunday. Although there is not enough for longer, continuous touring, those who don't mind some walking should find similar lengths of worthwhile skiing on the highest stretch of the Haute Route (from Barns of Haddoch northwards) and at "La Glace de Clash" which is on the Haute Route between the phone mast and the top of Short Cut -- although the top part of the steep descent north of the phone mast is probably bare for a short distance. It is quite remarkable that the snow has lasted this long, with daytime temperatures around plus 9 since Tuesday.

The warm weather has stripped most of the snow from the trails. The Range has 5% cover, the Little Range 10%. On the Haute Route, there is just over 100 metres of skiable snow in the usual place north of the phone mast (see photo) -- testament to the microclimate of "La Glace de Clash". This suggests there may be one or two similar lengths further along the Haute Route. Their survival for much longer is unlikely. We can only hope for a return to normality not too much later in the season!

It's been snowing in the Glens of Foudland this evening:

See [trafficscotland.org]

Perhaps Monday will reveal some cover at Clashindarroch?

(There really has been nothing to report since 20th February!)

Following the overnight snowfall, the snow depth on the trails on Monday morning was 5-10cm, with the better snow conditions on the lower trails. The upper trails were like the proverbial curate's egg -- "good in parts" -- with variability due to sunshine, wind scour, and sticky snow. On the Haute Route there were some bare patches, but these could mostly be bypassed by using drifted snow at the side. Highland Fling was thin and needed care in descent. The steep, bendy part of Leids Leap was effectively bare and unskiable.

The good snow on the Range and nearby trails offers the best chance of worthwhile skiing. Elsewhere, some walking can be expected as well as some skiable stretches. With unfrozen ground and the heat of the sun at this time of year, today's snow will suffer, but the forecast suggests there may be some topping up during the week.

Snow cover is much reduced today, although there were sleet showers this morning. The Range has 25% cover and the Little Range 60%. There are still some stretches of snow on the trails, e.g. well over 100 metres on the Main Drag beyond the Hut area, but (on the lower trails at least) it is very wet and melting -- flotation devices might be handy.

About 2cm of snow had arrived in the car park by midday today, and with snowfall forecast to continue into the evening there are good prospects for skiing on Sunday.

Saturday's snowfall amounted to 12cm on the lower trails and 14cm on the Haute Route. Today's skiing was quite slow, although the tramlines helped considerably.
On the Haute Route there were some short bare patches but there was sufficient snow at the side to get by.The sneakiest bare patch is at the blind bend on the Haute Route descent towards the Highland Fling junction, but even this was bypassable in the ditch on the left-hand side.

With the unfrozen ground the snow is unlikely to last once the milder conditions arrive on Monday.

At 10am today, 8cm wet snow in Clashindarroch car park (easy to get stuck!); 5-11cm on lower trails. Sleet and rain; temp plus 2. Heavy going, with new tramlines quicky melting down to slush. On Main Drag, 100m unskiable at Telemark Twist. Upper trails not visited. Lots of flooding on access roads.

Today, with the temperature only plus 1 at noon and a centimetre of fresh overnight, the snow was actually in better shape than on Wednesday. The forest was veiled in a damp mist and a curlew was calling over the moss. The car park remains a bit challenging. Surprisingly, it looks like the snow cover should last through Friday, but the prospects for the weekend suggest that most of it will disappear from the trails.

Plus 5 this morning at Clashindarroch and misty with a chilly easterly breeze. The snow has diminished somewhat, but not gone completely by any means. A quick recce indicated that there will still be long skiable stretches, but also long gaps (e.g. the lower part of Range Way, which is now green). The snow early on was quite crisp, but will get soggy through the day. On the lower trails, the remaining snow is around 3cm deep, but the Range has nearly full cover and is 5cm deep (plus a bit of water in places). The forecast suggests that Sunday will be much the same picture.
