I saw a video shared by the Lecht on their FB page saying after the two nursery slopes are filled, they plan to use some snow factory snow to get the park open. Any truth in this? Usually the park is an after thought for scottish ski industry

It would make sense, as the Snow Factory is opposite the bottom of the park and the Lecht are running an on-snow training centre pilot for GB Park and Pipe.

Great seeing so many kids lapping the Wren and Robin today. Great effort from the Lecht.

Too Right.
Honestly, im starting to think they should sell their Sufag guns for £1k each (a bit of a loss) and, with help from a grant, buy a 2nd Snowfactory, with that one producing snow from the top of the chair or a poma to serve the intermediate skiers.

They have by far been the best at proving the technology works.

I feel sorry for Glencoe - yes, they may have met some goals, but they spread out the snow down the uptrack too early (its almost all gone now) and had mechanical problems to deal with, that if had not occurred would have given them a much better shot at providing uplift + sledging.

I've suggested using snow-flex matting under the tow, but it would be a case of laying down a 2ft wide track, then making sure that it gets rolled up propto if large amounts of snow are forecast. There seems to be a snag with every move or idea when it comes to the logistics of operating a ski resort in Scotland!

As for me, well the lure of the current snowsports offerings is not enough to lure me up from the Lake District - its 5 hours drive to Glencoe, 6 to Nevis/Cairngorm and the Lecht.

Perhaps one of the more important things we'll learn this winter is whether the large snowfactory comes through the season unscathed at CairnGorm.

TechnoAlpin would not supply large units to Glencoe and the Lecht for the trial because of the expected wind speeds they would be exposed too. As I understand it they only rated the survival speed as 80km/hr and 120km/hr for a 'hardened' 3 tier unit.

However HIE bought the large snow factory outright, so all risk and liability of it going wrong rests with HIE - a risk that Glencoe and the Lecht could not afford to take against the manufactures advise.

The unit has already had one substantial battering with Hurricane Force SE winds at the summit accelerating down Coire Cas and nothing appears to have been overly stressed in the unit.

Perhaps TechnoAlpin have been unduly conservative with the wind speed recommendations. Given the large unit produces more snow than 2 small ones and does so using less energy than 2 small ones while costing significantly less than 2 small ones it is clear which makes economic sense - the question is where can they be put that A ) is not stupidly exposed and B ) be kept relatively unobtrusive which is a challenge for a large industrial plant!

All credit to The Lecht, I went up as a family of 4 today and lapped the magic carpet for a couple of hours.

It's not a backcountry haven but it's perfect for little snow badgers, it's are 4 and 2.

The Wren was complete, they had 2 fan guns making snow all the time we were there and the Snow Factory chucking it out to fill in the gaps.

I reckon they'll have the Robin open by tomorrow morning.

Good day out in the cracking weather

Lecht looks like the best place to go for a slide at the moment, the snow on the webcam looks good.

Good gains at the Lecht overnight and it’s in fantastic shape. Aberdeen / Cockbridge side won’t open but Tomintoul side is more hopeful. Will be good!
