Knee Braces.
Date Posted: 08.13hrs on Tue 19 Mar 19
Does anybody use them?
Did you get one on the recommendation of a health professional or just buy one?

My knees seem to need a fair bit of 'warming up' these days when I go skiing and feel quite sore afterwards.
I know the answer is see a physio but I just wondered what other folk did.
Cheers.

i bought a one out a chemist, its like a tubegrib but works great and gives the knee a wee bit extra support. 2 of my mates have proper knee straps with velcro etc

I bought mine in Tescos as a last minute buy before I went off for a weeks skiing.
It's neoprene and velcro with a cutout for the kneecap.

I did feel the benefit but I was wondering if anything was better.

Cheers.

Spraying fire at a burning bush wont help the bush but a joint will always help a joint...

I've tried those velcro ones with the knee hole, but I think I prefer the tube style ones as they're easier to move about in. Get ones with a strip of neoprene at the top otherwise they just ride down your leg through the day.

Alternatively I also use compression leggings and find these offer a surprising amount of support in place of braces.

I find the tube jobs tend to wrinkle up at the back , you definately kneed the hole or yer kneecap gets squished intae yer leg.
I have problems with me joints on windy days particularly, should probably pre-roll, but I sort of like the challenge.
When I can find them i use a pair of lonsdale wraparound neoprene thingies we got from the boxing club. I've tried allsorts , I wisnae jestin aboot th gaffa tape either.
Fancy givin the skimojo thingie a shot too.

There is always the SkiMojo

You can trial them at the Snow Factor before buying now apparently, according to their website.

First question is:
Are your leg / butt muscles strong to support your knees?
I have a problem knee, mainly when running, strength exercises really help.
Have used a simple knee tube, works well in adding an extra layer to get the warmth & blood flowing, though it can also restrict blood flow, so I used to remove it after warming up.

That Skimojo is some contraption, how long before we are cyborgs and ski lift companies aren't needed?

My right knee kinda dislocates every now and again depending how I move, going out on my bike seems the best thing I an do for it along with topping up certain receptors within me tae easy the pain of popping it back in.....

Aye good strong muscle is essential, most of the folk I know wi bad backs have very poor Ab tone/strength. A big fat yin always helps too.
Aye a few old car boot struts, a bit o meccanno a shit-ton of gorilla tape ,and a few inspiration sticks. I'm sure I could knock something up,

While I'm not the fittest person on the planet I think my legs are strong enough. I regularly, well fairly regularly, cycle 30km and hillwalking isn't a problem either.
It is just when I ski I feel I have problems.

Those Ski-Mojos are heart stoppingly expensive! The budget will stretch to a pair of them (even with my promised discount on next years ski passsmiling smiley ).

I will probably just have to bite the bullet and exercise more in preparation for next season.

They are but you can allegedly trial them at the Snow Factor. So you don't have to commit before knowing what difference they might make to you.

Oops, typo. That should read 'The budget will not stretch to a pair of them'

Have to own up to investing in a pair of mojos after snapping my patella
tendon in a fall when the leg folded beyond its design parameters.

Anyway, I've found the mojos to be well worth it overall. Mainly they help with
reducing fatigue and the duration of skiing you can do in one stint without
stopping for a break. They do change your balance slightly so I just switch
them off in bumps or tricky terrain to regain the feel you need but for
carving/cruising on decent piste they're pretty awesome. Biggest difference
I found last year abroad when you still had decent legs at the end of the
day to do some bumps which for a 50+ skier was a big bonus. My one day at the
Lecht this year I only activated them a couple of times as the runs weren't
really long enough to feel I needed them.

They are a bit fiddly and have had a few issues with some of the components
but service has been good and considering the forces they have to withstand
they are impressively engineered. Should be at the price mind.
