England and Wales snowpatches 2019.
Date Posted: 20.06hrs on Tue 26 Mar 19
It goes without saying that this has been a strange winter. The north Pennines have seen very little snow all winter and whenever we did get any, there was hardly any consolidation so it all melted very quickly. At the end of February I could see no snow on Cross Fell which is very unusual to say the least. I took walk up the fell on the 27th and found a few very small patches on the Northern side but these looked more like the last gasps of snow that usually remain in mid May. The Lake District fells also had very little snow at this point.

Quite a bit fell on strong westerly winds in March and there are now some reasonable accumulations in certain areas Helvellyn range, Blencathra etc) in the Lakes but once again, nothing is visible on Cross Fell etc although some patches may exist on the N. slopes.

Thanks Stringy. As of a couple of days ago there were still little patches on the Peak District, on Bleakloe. [www.instagram.com]

The situation across the country is pretty poor.

There appears to be very little in Snowdonia too. Helvellyn looks as though it's doing best up to now.

Still snow on whatever the hills are to the east of the M6 you see as driving south past penrith.
No shortage in the lake district including a reasonably low down one on the west side of Blencathra.
Apologies for lack of photos.

As of Saturday 13 April still some patches of snow visible on Plynlimon above about 1800 feet, I would guess that will mean there is also some in the Brecon Beacons

On the 14th April small snow patches were still visible on Plynlymon in mid Wales, as of the 20th April a few small patches and one reasonable size snow wreath/cornice remnant visible on the north side of Cadair Idris

A few photos from Helvellyn today. Photos from the same weekend a year ago for comparison are in the 2018 edition of this thread.

Good pictures Rich_T. The Brown cove patch is looking fairly healthy and will almost certainly be the last snow remaining this year.

Unfortunately I have not been able to get out much recently but as viewed from the Eden Valley, there is no snow visible on Cross Fell although it is possible that one or two patches remain on the Northern escarpment.

The Lake District Weatherline (Fell Top Assessors) website has had some useful pictures of Helvellyn and one of Scafell Pike etc (taken from Great Gable) a couple of days ago that showed a few patches remaining. Their pictures can be viewed here: [www.lakedistrictweatherline.co.uk]

I finally got round to going up Cross Fell today and it was in the nick of time!

I went to Cross Fell Well first and found a tiny patch of snow that only had a couple of hours left at most. If I'd gone this afternoon as I had originally intended it would have been gone. The first 2 pictures show the patch at about 11.30am and my dog, after posing nicely for scale, ate some it hastening its demise. Dogs have no respect for such ephemeral things!

I then walked along the Northern scarp looking in all the hollows and places I know hold snow and found no more. After visiting the top and wandering around a bit I went back to Cross Fell Well to see if any was left and there was a bit left. I was tempted to stay and watch it melt but thought better of it.

I'm pretty confident that this is/was the last snow in the Pennines and I can't remember a year when all snow was gone before May.

Stringy, I think 2017 might have seen all the English and Welsh snow be gone before the end of April.

You could be right Rich_T. I have just looked backed through my photos and there is nothing for 2017. I must have wiped that year from my memory! Either way, it's pretty unusual, but then it was a pretty unusual winter. I shall try and get to Helvellyn later in the week to see what's left there.
