Even some colder temperatures should see us managing to re-open. Just too mild to move snow at the moment to plug the gaps. Good news is upper mountain has filled in well over the last week and when we do re-open we should be able to get to the top with a bit of luck.

The upper mountain was not looking so bad today on the webcams today. A bit of promise... Plateau was fairly poor but going to be interesting to see what tomorrow's light brings.

Plateau Poma now open. Machines working on Old Mugs Alley, patrol looking further up but still a bit breezy for the Cliffhanger.

First time the summit webcam has caught a machine at the get off ramp of the Main Basin T-bar for a while!

Met Office already have a yellow warning for wind for the entire UK later Saturday through Sunday. Something is brewing, if the string winds go all the way South more chance we’ll be in the cold air and get snow and possible less wind. Let’s hope Mother Nature is brewing up a season saviour!

Can some kind soul please explain the wind speeds' effects at Coe? Trying to decide if it's worth the trip up, seeing on the WH weather forecast icons pretty low speeds indicated (including for today - and today stated at lower than Thurs or Fri), yet the Cliffy and Main Basin are closed today as it's too windy...
What am I idiotically missing?
Where's the best place to look to make a trip decision at least 12-24 hours in advance?
Thanks.

Elsie,

Forecasts can only provide so much information. Today was forecast to be 30 gusting 40mph which should have been OK for operating the Cliffy but unfortunately it was 5 to 10mph windier than forecast today at both Glencoe and Nevis. Tomorrow is forecast for summit speeds of just 15 gusting 20mph so Cliffy will definitely run. Friday is one of these unique days with a SE wind of between 40 and 60mph yet we expect to be able to operate as local geographic affects mean we will see much lighter winds than forecast. We tend to use Met office [www.metoffice.gov.uk] for Meall A Bhuiridh as our main port of call for weather information, but we do cross check it with other forecasters such as MWIS.

The high hasn't ridged quite as strongly as expected, so has left the West in a slightly stronger wind flow than was forecast for today, also a bit damper in the air which hasn't been good for the snow on the Plateau area with thin / worn and narrow areas. Coire Pollach uptrack looks like it will need some shovelling in the morning, but further up at Nevis and Glencoe should be reasonable if wind behaves!

Wind due to go SE on Friday so could be the best day at the Coe, but though the pattern is set for a ridge of high pressure being flattened by deep low pressures giving a stormy spell, the detail is fluid to say the least!

No power at Glencoe following a lightning strike shortly after 5.40 am, it was pretty wild from around 4 to dawn with very gusty winds as some large convective cells passed through!

Showers are still frequent, base webcams are now up and running on site generator.

Snow showers piled in through the day on Wednesday, but the wind did gradually trend down late morning allowing a noon opening. Snow showers have post dusk become scattered and currently plenty of clear skies around the West Highlands, so it looks promising for Thursday with the full Summit to Moor vertical of 2400ft available once the Main Basin T-bar opens.

^Skiing to the Carpark at 1200ft, but not corduroy all the way.

^Wide cover to fairly low level on the low level Red Access Run

^Wall T-bar opened late afternoon.

Looking great on the webcams today. Very glad to return to these conditions. Long may they last and GC can get some much needed income rolling in reliably. Though forecast for weekend looks like a shut out. :-( But if it comes off with big snow falls surely that will be them setup for the rest of season?

It does indeed, though the 12:20 image appears to show a couple of idiot snowboarders on the flypaper.

Snow continuing to fall this evening as showers pile in from the W/NW.

^Fences loaded on the Plateau, natural snow fields further up the mountain have caught huge amounts of snow recently!

^Chucking it down to below the Carpark on Tuesday afternoon.

Summit to Moor riding with 2400ft of lifted vertical on the cards Wednesday, but it looks like a day for being ready for first lift and being prepared for a marked deterioration in overhead after lunch with a possible early end to play.

Unless forecast changes by morning, half day tickets will be sold from opening - if you get the full day it will be a bonus!

The mid mountain digital thermometer is reading too high tonight at -1.6°c and has only changed very slowly - it appears to have been buried by the drifting snow and will need to be raised! Now measuring the snow pack temperature not air temperature .
