Nevis Range 2019/20
Date Posted: 22.26hrs on Fri 17 Jan 20
Apparently Nevis Range sold their hydro scheme for ££££ and have reinvested lots of it back into the ski infrastructure - new travellator and a bespoke snow factory.
Does anyone know what is happening with the snowmaking system as they don't seem to have been open during the past few weeks when, despite the mild weather, they have surely been able to produce some snow?

I doesn't seem to have been working and I didn't see it running this weekend. It was producing on Xmas Eve, but is seemed to be quite fine particle size and was getting blown easily. It didn't seem to be a high volume either. The press release said it could produce 155 tons of flaked ice per day. That slightly in excess of 300m3. That is a lot, and it would have been noticeable if it had been churning it out. 2100m3 per week is a lot of flaked ice.

The travelator did not seem in a fit state to run, and insufficient coverage immediately around it to warrant it anyway.

Nevis did not seem to have their troubles to seek this weekend. I believe they were a piste machine down, and the goose uptrack was unpisted, meaning the tow could only run at a reduced speed, which meant the queues were longer than needed. There are a number of springboxes missing Ts too.

Remounting the quad chairs was proving a challenge too. Wind was worse than anticipated today too. Snow was excellent, especially on Saturday.

Optimism is a good thing, but today it just got too busy for the 2 lifts that were available.

I find it disturbing that they have so much trouble running modern, well engineered lifts. That coupled with their Walter Mitty view of which lifts will "open later" makes the place my fifth favourite resort in Scotland

Any news from the back corries?

The mountain status has them 'Closed' but surely they picked up a lot of wind blown snow in the recent storms.

Webcams don't make for great viewing.
Hopefully enough will survive until the cooler weather arrives!
Half term is booked for a visit, but it's on the flexible rate this time!

Nevis is catching the edge of an area of fairly heavy snow that’s feeding off Loch Linnhe since dusk! Hope it keeps up!

Looks like it started drizzling at Nevis before dark.
I hope this mild spell doesn't do too much damage to the gains.
Ideally a bit of moisture in the snow pack, a refreeze and then fresh snow would be perfect for the medium term.
Fingers crossed.

Does anyone have any idea if there is any significant production from the flake plant. Is it fully operational?

I guess the west coast centres will be making significant production after the Glenshee snowmaking school starts.

Re snow making factory - it doesn't look like NR have been using theirs like the other centres. However the effect seems one of opinion as they have advertised their lessons on the mat.
It'll be interesting to understand the costs of running the plants in comparison to the income generated. Considering the very mild weather and dry mat in place at NR, maybe they have been environmentally responsible.
Their usage plan maybe for cold dry spells and not to try and take on mother nature (and the inevitable)
All open for debate!

Some gains being made at NR.
I don't think they are far from offering some sport again. Particularly on the goose.

With accomodation booked for half term in FW, fingers are crossed. With 1 days skiing out of 10 possible, (over 3 trips) I think we are due some luck.

Nevis might have had water issues supplying the snow making plant.. By now they should have produced enough twat gin to divert their resources to make enough snow to push out when the holidays come up..

Outstanding conditions at Nevis Range today, everything well covered in a deep layer of snow and very quiet slopes. Managed a couple of laps of the backs which offered some cracking turns, with the traverse out as easy as it gets - no rocks to be seen. Get up tomorrow if you can!

Braveheart has not been used this season?

We are used not having the Great Glen chair working, but with this amount of snow Braveheart must be wanted/able to run?
