What's this?What's this?What's this?
It was not always snowy in the 80s and 90s!

Quite a few comments and posts on various social media pages about how it was always snowy in the 80s and 90s etc! Some will remember the terrible run of seasons that was 88/89. 89/90 and 91/92 with something or a reprieve in 1991!

Meteorlogically the period leading up to winter the past couple of seasons has had striking similarities to 88/89 and 89/90. In the former we didn't see any lift served riding in Scotland until mid February when CairnGorm managed to open just the middle third of Coire Cas!

Transient snow events in big storms did occur prior to the season getting underway, one of these events was the weekend of Sat 4th / Sun 5th Feb:

This put down a significant amount of new hill snow, particularly in the Western Highlands (and in particularly the Ness catchment caught a lot).

The inevitable warm front swept in on high winds and very heavy rain, the unconsolidated new snow basically just meant that 3-4 days of precipitation was concentrated into one!

On the morning of Tuesday 7th February 1989 the central span of Ness Railway viaduct toppled in to Inveness Harbour as the River Ness reached the highest level on record.

These past two seasons and historical data should be used in westmonster to get some of Scotlands money back to further develop tourism up here and make little britain 'big' again. Tell the asshats doing shit like that will win hearts and minds up here and the natives will get on board with their plan to own the world again...

Interesting points. It's not as simple as we think is it - the weather?!

What I have been thinking is how much snow has fallen in the west, in comparison to the lack of ski days.. must be some sort of record, albeit not one to celebrate!!

Hopefully, some positive records can still be challenged before the season is out!

Do the weather nerds take into account what the jet stream has been up to in the past and present etc ?

Just imagine, the centres might be actual 'resorts' if they thought about investing like global resorts in the past when the weather was shite....

Weesam, patter 0-10. Read "the only thing brexiters wont want chlorinated", that covers a number of reasons, still not sure why they want it bleached though?

Aside from the deep low that brought the flooding that took out the Ness Vidaduct on the morning of 7th Feb 2989, just under a week later a very deep low pressure swept in leading to flash warnings of extreme weather from the Met Office. This storm knocked out the power grid across most of the North of Scotland on the Monday evening and saw the UK's highest recorded low elevation windspeed when a speed of 142mph was recorded in Fraserbrough on 13th February 1989.
