Lecht Snowmaking fundraising
Date Posted: 11.18hrs on Tue 3 Nov 20
Interesting to see how the Lecht's fundraising goes for 4 x TF10's. As things stand they are at 18% of their £80k target.

Does anyone know any more details of the plan with the guns? Will they be static or on pilons like the existing manual guns or will they be mobile in order to fill in more than just the beginners area?

The crowd funding page gives more details

Have a look & support this progressive project. Automatic snow making like this has transformed ski areas all over Europe. Many of them cover their runs in November or December and this base lasts through until Easter even at low altitudes and on south facing slopes

I hope, despite their old age, they keep the sufag fan guns where they are and use the TF10's to create a route down from the chairlift and up one tow line.

sure, but those ski areas will not be subject to rapid and repeated thaws that occur in Scotland. A base laid down at the Lecht in November or December will be guaranteed not to last until Easter. It would not be guaranteed to last the weekend.

In fact, many European resorts experience thaw & refreeze, especially at low altitudes. Temperatures above freezing at night are not at all uncommon as are daytime temperatures of 10 or 15°C. A foot or two base of artificial snow is so durable that many Austrian resorts actually break it up with piste bashers at the end of the season because it takes so long to melt, even when valley temperatures are 20°C or so.

I don't think the Lecht would be investing £400,000 if they thought the base would melt over a weekend, but I do understand that some people are yet to be convinced.

It's a shame that 0.4% of the money that Cairngorm are getting from us tax payers couldn't have been sent in their direction. Then they would have no need for crowdfunding.

To give HIE their due, they have given The Lecht a £300,000 grant towards this project on top of the £200k they gave them a couple of years ago to assist with the Snow Factory.

I can see schools fae the central belt heading up there eventually if they keep it white, which should be easy most seasons after they get what they want..

The 5 green guns on the Robin and Wren (3 pole mounted) are the old manual Sufag guns. But there are 2 new TA yellow TF10s at the foot of the Grouse Poma and 2 more hooked up to hydrants on the lower Eagle. It might just have been the light but it looks as if the electric distribution boxes by the hydrants have been renewed on the Eagle - they look very shinny from a distance!
