In theory thats a 1km long 20m wide run, in practice though it doesn't tell you to what depth or in what timescale, or whether that's just the area there's hydrants in or whether they have cannons for all of it.

Doesn't that give you 20 000 sq. m, not 20 000 m sq., which would be 400 sq. km?

Both the same really

[searchsmb.techtarget.com]

If it said 20000 squared without the unit then you could say it was 400000k

Looks like you are both getting confused by the mathematics here guys.
Speaking as a maths teacher many of my students also have similar problems understanding squaring and squared units.

sq m is an abbreviation for SQUARE metres

m sq is an abbreviation for metres SQUARED and not metres square

Both of these abbreviations are poor practice and the correct SI label is m followed by a superscript 2. i.e. m to the power 2.

and boarder shame on you

20 000 squared is 400 million! Extra homework for you tonight.

Sir

Er, in what way was I confused? I appear to have said exactly what you did.

142x141m would give you (roughly) twenty thousand square meters (20 000 sq. m).

20 000 m sq. would give you 400 000 000 sq. m, or 400 sq. km.

Or (20 000 m^2) against (20 0000m)^2.

Anyway, this is drifting ridiculously off-topic...

[Edited to remove the extra zeros. I don't know where they came from, I was thinking of 400 million, honest.]

Sorry it was late when i wrote that post tongue sticking out smiley How did i manage to get Univeristy maths and get that wrong!! tongue sticking out smiley

From what i read Metres Squared and Square Metres are both the same but as Pfairbrother says you should use the superscript. However most dont because they don't know how to superscript. Metres squared is just how you would read 1 m^2 but is very general.

This site explains it all!

[mathforum.org]

So Glenshee should really have written the superscript or metres squared not metres square

You've missed the point David as well as being incorrect by a factor of 100.
1 m sq is an abbreviation for 1 metre squared - equivalent to the area of a square with sides 1m x 1m.

20 000 m sq means 20 000 metres squared - equivalent to the total area of 20 000 squares with sides 1m x 1m. NOT a square with sides of 20 000 m.

Also 20 000 squared is 400 followed by 6 zeros!!! not 8.

Extra homework for you as well!!

Paul

On topic please. smiling smiley

Anyway to avoid further confusion if you want m2 put m [ ^2 ] (without the spaces).

Here speaketh the geography teacher who is now totally confused

Boarder said "If it said 20000 squared without the unit then you could say it was 400000k"

I read that to be 400,000,thousand ( k= thousand) which is the same as 400,000,000 which is 400million

which is what Paul said "and boarder shame on you 20 000 squared is 400 million! Extra homework for you tonight.

Do we all agree or am I missing some fundamental point?

Right snowmaking....

this is all bloody obvious, and I've only got O level maths grade C!

using simple numbers:

10 square metres is 10 little squares measuring 1x1 metre each

10 metres squared is 100 little squares measuring 1x1 metre each

so
142m x 141m is 20,022 square metres, as Alan puts it: thats a 1km long 20m wide (1000x20=20000).

20,022 metres squared is 400 million square metres. Which is about the size of a big city.
