I can't imagine stock piling snow is a great idea.

Sure the pile would last long, as a pile. But as soon as you move it, presumably during the said thaw, it would melt really quickly; a problem Glencoe faced a few weeks ago I believe; warm air gets into the snow and melts it.

Getting a good solid deep base is key.

Realistically you wouldn't need to line a run top to bottom of the mountain. Just a run, in my mind the cas would work well, lined with t40s that would run when there's a chance would be enough to provide good prolonged sport. And a few mobile devices to fill in the gaps.

A reservoir could be built to meet water needs, environmentalists would probably get in the way a bit here though.

Get a big (preferably new) slurry tank and mount it on top of the Sheiling "workshop"!

Hey presto !! Water reservoir for the lower slopes, in combination with the White-Lady burn, and with a bit of trace-heated pipework to the zig-zag pump house, for up top as well!

Start looking out materials Tupp !

I'll scour the yard tomorrow. A few nods to Dunc and I'll have a load or two up there by the next morning. I can source a cheap tank or two as well. It must be removed from its current location in the dark though. Anyone willing to help must have a balaclava and a shifter or two. I can supply the hammers and gas axe.

Not strictly relevent to this thread but I know the biathlon venue at Ruhpolding in Germany stockpiled a mountain of snow over the summer one year. I think it was in the region of 50m high. They covered it with straw & plastic. About half of it survived the summer & they used muckspreader to form a 1m deep base on the tracks. But then biathlon in Germany has a lot of money we have to make the best of far more limited resources in this country.

I think stock piling is a great idea, just stock pile it right down the length of the piste.

I think stockpiling comes under snow farming and if i recall correctly that is one of the reason they built a new bridge over the burn by day lodge - intention is to push the cleared snow off the carpark up onto the lower slopes. Obviously the priority is to get teh runs in shape first. Do i detecet a long term plan in play here, snow cannon tial. winchat, second trial of snow cannon T40, Snow cannon pilot, new style snow fencing, new bridges, stronger structure on Cas Tow. Probaly a lot more going on that you don't read about.

I hope that all the machine made snow in the Ptarmigan bowl has been packed down really firmly....with winds of 80-100mph it could all end up in the Ciste and East Wall gullies!

Kind regards

Have Cairngorm been making much use of the snow cannons and is there scope to make some over the next few nights?

Coming down on the Funicular last night one of the guns at the Sheiling had its light on and you could see the glow from the control panel from the train. If it was in automode the AWS indicates around 8 hours of snowmaking was possible despite the free air temp staying above zero all night.

Yep. humidity in the North pennines is currently below 20% eye popping smiley

After being above 90% for much of summer. Should help dry things out this week.

We've just past the 1000 hour mark for potential snow making at the mid-station level on CairnGorm with Ratnik Sky Giant guns this season. For a wetbulb temperature of -2.0°c for the T40s (they can make snow at warmer wetbulb temps in very low humidity) we are currently at 780 hours of suitable wetbulb temperatures.

On Tuesday the snow gun was being dug out in the Ptarmigan Bowl and fitters were working on it. Hope at least some of them are in auto mode because I reckon the Summit wetbulb is currently -10°c and it's been moving about between -5 and -7°c at the SSC hut.

Just noticed on the webcam that there is a machine in action at the middle.

At first I thought the Shieling was on fire again !!
