What's good and what's bad about Glasgow?
Date Posted: 13.02hrs on Fri 4 May 07
Hello folks

I'd appreciate some advice. I've been offered a job in Glasgow - a good one, too- and need to make up my mind whether to accept it, as I genuinely enjoy my current work too.

I know there's plenty of Glaswiegans on here, so wondered if I pose the question -

Cheers

Although everyone will tell you its a pish hole its not

its a great place to be. Night life is buzzing, good range of things to do at night and weekends, there are lots of nice areas, esp the west end (full of students and posh people though). I like glasgow as a whole.

the one downside ar the neds, but they wont hassle you much

There is no doubt that the West Coast has stunning coastlines & hills. - I grew up on the edge of Glasgow, and it still impresses me how you can be in great countryside within about 1/2-hour from centre. - Great territory for cycling & walking.

But if you are moving from East to Glasgow, be prepared for more precipitation than you normally get. - It's warmer, but does rain more often & more heavily.

If I was moving back to Glasgow area again, it would be Clyde-coast, or Trossachs areas.....or maybe Clydebank ( winking smiley GW) ??

Glasgow is wicked..

The vast majority of folk are as friendly as fook, and most folk are a laugh in some way.. There is always something going on, and as Andy says the night life is buzzing.. And there are hunners of good shops tae keep the lassies happy..

And for a big city ye have some top quality areas close by to escape tae for some quiet or more noise.. Loch Lomond is only just down the road and the Trossachs are not that far for some cool biking and fishing or just exploring. And the Mighty Glencoe is only 1.5 hours away..

The only bad thing I can think of is the neds and the knife culture that exists here, but they stick tae there own usualy. They can be a pain in the arse sometimes but at the same time is there feck all tae do here for the majority of those kids..

Edit: I'm to slow at typing,lol.. Clydebanks wicked(pubs are shite, but Glasgow is 10min in the car,if that), probaly the best place tae buy in the now in the west, loads of new flats and houses are going up soon on the Clyde(next door tae moi)big bumper of a college as just been built.. Ma wee street is gonie be full a' burds soon.. And we have the hills up the back, loads of wee lochs and burns full of wild trout and its great for walking aboot.. And I know aw the nutters here so ya wid be cool.. lol And the mighty Glencoe can be done 40min if yer in ma passenger seat.lol

That's true, I forgot to mention that. - Friendly & Funny.

Take a spin on the Clockwork Orange (Underground Trains) and you'll find out.

Surely you mean slice?

From Alan Partridge "It's called cholestrol. Scottish people eat it."

I call them square. Posh people call them Lorne, never heard it called slice?

I remember once, my mother made my new girlfriend at the time (an English girl - drrrty. damn - she was a keeper....) a full Scottish breakfast Square Sausages, Black Pudding, fruit pudding ("All this is "fried""??) and a glass of Irn Bru.

Poor girl was too polite to not eat it and had heartburn for days! I reckon it took a year off her life.

I've decided to take the job (Senior Heritage Advisor to British Waterways Scotland!) and move to Glasgow. Not knowing the City, any advice on where to live?

I'll have to rent for a while, and Wouldn't mind living out of the City but within practical commutable cycling distance (8 miles-ish) in a reasonably nice neighbourhood with ok facilities - i.e. pubs and a co-op. Any suggestions?

Nice one,,

Is it the canals yer going tae work wi?

East end of Glasgow is a bit wild, though it could be a good buy/gamble in some bits, as they are going for some commonwealth games or something like that.. The prices will soar.. But its a bit iffy...

West is always best, ye have the area from Glasgow tae Partick and thats connected tae the underground(Clockwork Orange) and full of pubs, burds, students, posh burds and dicks aff the telly, and buses are now running after the trains close, 24hours(sweeet).. But It can be a bit pricey for digs.

Then head a bit north missing Whiteinch and Yoker(rotten, the 2 of the should be Nuked then burnt tae make sure)..

And ya should hit Anniesland this places seems tae be Scotlands Bournemouth, its reminds me abit like that film Cocoon, it full of old dudes that are only alive casue of Batteries, Viagra and Werthers Originals... Then next after that still going west ya have Knightswood this place is awright its pretty quiet and ya can still get a good deal.. Forgot tae say miss oot Temple just after Anniesland, though I think there is a few new builds in at the old ford garage, but a widnae...

Then stay on the Boulavard(A82) tae the coe!!! And completly miss oot Drumchapel , its no even worth talking aboot, they shouldnae a killed Saddam, they should have sent him in there tae sort it oot!!!

Then ya have sunny Clydebank same again west is best, east in this town is a bit nuts, I'll no mention the roughish bits noo.. But doon the bottom is cool, the centre, they are opening the river back up, it used tae aw shipyards, noo they have built a big college, and are putting loads of flats/houses up along the water(its huge).. Up the top of Clydebank there is Duntocher and Hardgate too of the better areas though Duntochers pure inbread, yer granchildrens granchildren will still never be from the "village". But these two places are awright tae cycle out of, its getting back thats the killer they are up a good old bit.... Then there is Parkhall this is kinda kinda cool tae a point(A block of shops got blown up last year, and it was no gas leak!)... Miss oot Dalmuir and yer at Old-Kilpatrick, this place is pretty cool, bit village life again but oot the way. Plenty of decent areas here, and its sill in Clydebank. And the hills are just up the back of Duntocher and Old-Kilpatrick ..

The cycle track(loch lomond tae Glasgow track runs through most of the above except [Duntocher and Hardgate, but it runs right trough Yoker and Maryhill its usually awright but i might look at one of these [www.securitydirect.co.uk] and get big plates for hot days, thats when aw the loons are oot...

The south Side of Glasow is awright, but ye wid probaly have tae drive a shitty badly pimped up Merc wi a big bass tube and lights under it, and talk in a stupid fooking accent, london/american tae fit in most places, and it fooking stinks a' curry powder!

I cannae believe a didane wee wit ya wrote William, funny as fook, classic!!

prices for flats are high, but house prices are rising fast there so would be a good investment, but need to get a good area in there, as there are soem bad streets

oi!

(quite a funny true story about Maryhill. A few months ago I was in Maryhill for a wedding and I was having a few drinks before the wedding with my dad and my uncle (can't remember the name of the pub) and this weedy nasty looking Junkie comes up to the bar, really big attitude for a little guy (always the way).

Anyway, he picks up my pint of Guiness and starts drinking it, in front of me, brazen as you like. Now: I'm 6'4", my dad is 6'3" so I'm thinking, this fella MUST be crazy. So I say, trying to be polite, "Excuse me, I think you've picked up my pint by mistake".

He stares at me, and goes off his head - pushes me square in the chest and says, "oootside."! And off he marches to the front door. At the same time he is about to pull the door open, somebody from outside pushes it to get in, and the door smacks this little junkie in the face knocking him on the floor. The whole pub erupts with laughter and he gets up, blood pissing out his nose, red faced and storms out! hahaha)
