Citreon Xsara all the way! I swear its the tiny narrow wheels and front wheel drive but I've never been stuck. Skis fit easily when folding down one seat in the back leaving room for 3 pax. Also had 3 bikes and passengers in it, but only on short drives.

Saying that, a friend has the A4 1.8T Quattro estate and its spot on. I think its a bit steep on fuel (30-35mpg) but if you check Autotrader, I've been keeping an eye on a 3.0tdi quattro thats still not sold. Still about 40mpg but goes like stink.

Before the Audi I had a 306 turbo diesel. Like the Xsara, skinny tyres, it makes a real difference.

One of my mates let me have a drive of his subaru legacy estate on monday and I think I have found the car for me. Just got to find a nice one in my budget. I was astounded by the levels of grip offered by his car on the snow. He has a set of verdestein winter tyres fitted and the thing gave no hint of slipping and sliding even under moderate heavy footedness in a nice safe snowy spot.

I've got a Vauxhall Vivaro LWB hi roof with the 1.9 engine. Get's about 38mpg and you can stand up in it which is a massive advantage over bongos and VWs.

I equipped it myself from a panel van and it cost about £1500 to do including the propex heater and hob.

I've extensively winterised it and it's done great in the last 2 winters.

I love it but I am paranoid about the gearbox as that is the Trafic/Vivaro's achilles heel.

Here's to the 2600 mile trip to France and Switzerland over christmas and new year!

Even better I walked into my local tyre garage this morning to enquire about snow tyres to find they had 4 in stock so they got fitted this morning!! My bank balance has taken some hammering this past few weeks! Just home from work in -10 degrees and quite impressed with the new tyres.

Hi Murfey - sorry someone local has responded to my ad, so hopefully selling them today

picked up a screw in one of the winter tyres on the forester... so need to get that repaired today. hope it can be repaired, as dont want to have to buy a full set of tyres. you need do that on a subaru... if there is a big difference between tyre diameter.

sure

a used tyre, like the one i punctured, has 4mm tread.
a brand new tyres has 8-9mm tread for a car, and for example the offroad tyre i also got for landcruiser yesterday has a 14mm tread.
so the diameter is different between a worn and new tyre!

subaru used to say something about the allowable difference between the circumference of tyres (which of course depends on diameter)

Ah right ok that makes sense. Would that affect the 4wd drive if one tyre was brand new and others part worn?

i think that is the idea - the centre viscous diff can get overworked

e.g.

or offical line from subaru.com

"A small difference in wear isn't going to do much harm, but subaru.com has this to say:

On All-Wheel Drive (AWD) vehicles, it is extremely important that the rolling or outer circumferences of the tires be within 1/4 inch of each other. This means that you must physically measure the size of the tire. This is best done with the weight of the vehicle off the tire and at the tread centerline. Also be certain that the tires are properly inflated since this can affect your readings.

If you need to replace just one tire, the same holds true. The measured difference in circumference between the replacement tire and the other tires on the vehicle cannot exceed 1/4 inch.

Depending on the vehicle mileage, it might be better to replace all four tires.

If the vehicle mileage is low and the tires have been rotated and driven at the proper inflation pressures, then you may be within the allowable 1/4-inch difference in circumference.

If the difference between the new/replacement tire and the current tires is within this 1/4-nch maximum, then the tire should be compatible. If it is not, then other tires will need to be replaced to conform to the 1/4-inch rule.

So, in terms of tread depth, 1/4 inch in circumference is about 1 mm of tread. The difference between fairly-worn and unworn can be a lot more than that... "

different brands of tyres although having the same tread depths can have differing rolling circumfrence. Most modern 4x4 have this issue, you can normally get away with about 4mm of differance
